The Indian star tortoise is a common victim of illegal wildlife trade, primarily traded to be kept as pets. The star-like patterns on its shell have led to this animal’s desirability and popularity as a pet. Superstitious beliefs of good luck and feng shui further drive this trade.

Owners may be unaware that it is illegal to keep Indian star tortoises as pets. They also may not know about their nutritional, habitat, and care requirements, leaving these animals prone to metabolic and respiratory diseases.

In the wild, Indian star tortoises are a valuable part of their ecosystem. Let us take pride in this iconic animal, and let them exist in the wild where they belong.

We present the story of the Bengal monitor lizard, a victim of superstition.

Bengal monitor lizards are majestic reptiles evocative of bygone dinosaurs. According Maratha legend, this formidable lizard helped secure a battle win by scaling the towering walls of a fort.

These animals are relatively harmless to humans, comfortable scavenging around human-dominated settlements and keeping the population of pests in check.

However these once common place lizards are becoming rare to sight in certain landscapes. They are hunted and traded for their copulatory organs, skin, meat, fat, claws, and blood, fueled by superstitious beliefs.

We must protect this species or risk losing both an ecological ally and a part of our history.

Did you know that every year, 7 million lives are lost due to exposure to fine particles in polluted air. And left unchecked, these deaths are estimated to increase by 50% by 2050. Fossil fuels are a major culprit, causing 4.5 million premature deaths and costing $8 billion daily.

91% of the world's population is exposed to air quality that exceeds WHO guideline limits? That's a staggering statistic, but it's a harsh reality we face today.

Even more concerning, according to the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) released by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago, air pollution is shortening the lives of residents by 11.9 years in Delhi NCT, the most polluted city in the world. The same report ranks India as the 2nd most polluted country in the world. We captured these images on the streets of Delhi during January earlier this year.

In 2022, India ranked 8th for the worst air quality globally according to IQAir, with six cities in the top 10, 39 cities in top 50 and 65 cities in top 100.

It's time to take action! 7th September is the day designated for International Day of Clear Air for Blue Skies. Let's make cleaner air a priority for our health and country’s future. We all need to come together to overcome air pollution.

Each year on 2nd Feb, we celebrate World Wetlands Day. It is a reminder for all humankind to be aware of the key role wetlands play in creating balance in Mother Nature.

This year’s theme is “Wetlands Action for People and Nature” to emphasise the importance of actions to ensure conservation and sustainable use of wetlands for human and planetary health.

Watch the film on our official website - ‘Haryana - The Abode of Birds’ which shares a peep into the exceptionally rich avifauna of Sultanpur National Park and Bhindawas Wildlife Sanctuary and the efforts these sanctuaries and parks have made to preserve our wetlands.

Meet the Kalij Pheasant. Native to the foothills of the Himalayas, this bird has a blue-black glossy plumage with a bright red facial skin and a long black tail.

- the Kalij was first described in 1790 by the English naturalist John Lantham and was first introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in 1962.

The main threats to them are hunting and habitat loss. And although the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List has listed it as Least Concern, more studies are required to understand the population size and relate it to the percentage of decline to develop evidence-based conservation actions for this beautiful bird.

Shifting cultivation or Jhum, a farming system is predominantly practised by indigenous communities across the world. In India, 90 % of this is practised in Northeast India.

Jhum cultivators, popularly known as "Jhumias", have been practising this form of cultivation since time immemorial and has both socio-cultural and religious significance for them.

I am sharing a few photographs of our recent film project on Jhum Cultivation, that is at the post-production stage and being edited by Debashish Nandi

After 15 days, the shoot of our latest project with Shishu Sarothi , Assam has come to an end. Our camera team, Promod and Seemanta, have filmed tirelessly in the field, interacting with the locals, bonding with the children and working together with the Shishu Sarothi team.

Photographs by Promod Saikia enjoyed being with the children. "Going to their school in Karbi Anglong brought back my childhood memories."

Seemanta Jyoti Baishya ( Team) says, "Being part of this shoot has really been a humbling experience. This was the first time I got a chance to interact with persons with disabilities and got a glimpse into their lives. I really enjoyed meeting the Shishu Sarothi team and all the students and their families."

After 104 years, Bijou Jabtu flowers rediscovered in Assam
By Roopak Goswami
Guwahati, Jan 10: Researchers of Bodoland University have rediscovered a shrub, Trigonostemon semperflorens, in Assam after 104 years.
The shrub Trigonostemon semperflorens was found from Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary in Kokrajhar district during a survey. The rediscovery has been published in Asian Journal of Conservation Biology.
Sanswrang Basumatary a research scholar and Dr. Sanjib Baruah Assistant Professor of the Department of Botany, Bodoland University found this during routine floristic surveys from Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary.
Trigonostemon semperflorens are large shrubs or small trees, upto 5 metres tall. The plants have small attractive bluish black flowers. It is known as Bijou Jabtu in Bodo language.
“The occurrence of this species in Assam was first reported by Indian Botanist and Forest Officer Upendra Nath Kanjial (1859-1928) and his team in scientific literature known as Flora of Assam. However, scrutiny of the literature and herbarium specimens revealed that this species was first collected in 1915 by U.N. Kanjilal from an elevation of about 1524 m in Khasi and Jaintia Hills (presently in Meghalaya).Other than that the species had not been spotted since then,” Sanjib Baruah, an assistant professor of botany at Bodoland University, told NewsFile.
