Exploring how India Votes- What the Data Tells Us

India is the world’s largest democracy with nearly 97 crore eligible voters for the 2024 General Lok Sabha Elections. But, do you know how many people would actually turn up on polling day and cast their vote? Are we deteriorating as a democracy with voter turnout going lower every year?
We take a deep dive into the history of how India has voted. We explore what the trends in voting have been since 1952 right up to 2019. Voter turnout rates give us keen insights into the mood of each election. Higher voter turnout indicates a significant moment in history that compelled voters to vote in higher numbers. We also look into how key demographic bases have voted over the years like minorities, women and lower castes and what could possibly be in store for this election.
