Today, we’re announcing two new hires: Shani O. Hilton, Civic News Company’s new editor in chief, and Andrew Golis, our new chief operating officer. Shani previously served as managing editor and senior vice president at the Los Angeles Times, and before that, as VP of news and programming at BuzzFeed News. Andrew previously served as WNYC’s chief content officer, and vice president at Vox Media.

“Shani and Andrew could both work anywhere they want in media,” said Civic News Company CEO Elizabeth Green. “We are incredibly fortunate that, for their next chapters, they are choosing to work here, on the problem we put first: delivering the highest quality local news about the most important civic topics to the communities that need it most.”

We’re excited to announce the launch of Civic News Company, the parent organization of nonprofit newsrooms Chalkbeat, Votebeat, and future beats to come.

After its launch in 2014, Chalkbeat CEO & co-founder Elizabeth Green knew that Chalkbeat’s unique networked approach to local journalism was special. Its success enabled us to launch Votebeat, first as a pop-up and now as a full-time newsroom.

It’s no secret that local news is in crisis, which the prevalence of disinformation and a widespread distrust of the media have only exacerbated. Watching this unfold over the past several years, we’ve wondered what we can do to combat this crisis.

Our answer is Civic News Company. Civic News Company will house nonprofit, independent newsrooms committed to reporting on issues of civic importance, with and for communities often neglected by traditional media.
