The Lutheran Digest God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars. --Martin Luther

No Dripping Here!

By Diane Stark Honey, it’s dripping,” I told my husband as he helped me by clearing the dinner dishes from the table. “Put your hand under the dish so it doesn’t drip on the floor.” My husband, Eric, nodded and dutifully did as I instructed. “If I have to mop the floor when you’re done, then your help wasn’t really all that helpful,” I added. For This Family, We Give Thanks

By Nancy Hoag My husband and I were longing for a holiday around the table with our own family. In years past, even the joy of being with neighbors or Scotty’s colleagues had sufficed. But this year we would be living in a travel trailer and building Habitat for Humanity houses nearly two-thousand miles from the place we called home. Daily, I’d been dreaming about the familiar faces that “should have been” gathered together; when Thanksgiving arrived, I doubted I’d be able to shake the familiar sadness that too often gave me the sense that we’d become completely disconnected. Living and Loving

By Tammy Darling My heart spins, restless. Like a hamster on a wheel, I am spinning, turning, going…nowhere. I begin to wonder how long I’ve been living in the wilderness where thoughtless repetition replaces true living. A thread of dread courses through my veins. Questions pile up like the unfolded laundry on my bed. At what point did I go from living to lost? [ 968 more words ]

Holy Innocents

Millie Ragosta Like most almost-four-year-olds, Justin is a quick study. When Ruthie reads him a new bedtime story, he digests the high points at once and in a few subsequent readings fixes every single word and nuance of expression into the computer in his head. After that, trying to read him the story is redundant; he anticipates the reader’s every word. [ 411 more words ]

By Sally E. Stuart Are you a Christian driver?” My immediate response was, “Certainly, I've been a Christian since I was 13, and I've been driving for more years than I can count.” “No,” came the answer. “You didn't understand the question. It was not, 'Are you a Christian who drives?' but, 'Do you drive as a Christian should?'” It was a question I wasn't sure I wanted to answer, one it seems many Christians try to avoid. The Day the Tigers Played Like Kittens

by Richard Bauman Most baseball fans have thought, "Heck, I could play better than that," after watching a millionaire Major Leaguer boot a simple groundball, strikeout with the bases loaded, or misplay a routine fly ball. Of course, we fans never get the chance to prove our baseball prowess. It’s probably a good thing, too, when you consider what happened the one time a group of amateurs did put on a major league team’s uniforms and played a regularly scheduled game. [ 712 more words ]

The Proof

by Diane Stark What’s wrong, Mom? You seem upset,” my 15-year-old daughter, Julia, asked. I shrugged. “I met my friend Susan for coffee this afternoon. We got into an argument about something, and it’s really bothering me.” “You argued with Susan? About what?” “Honestly, we fought about religion.” “I thought Susan was a Christian too.” “She is, but the way she perceives God is far different than the way I understand Him.” [ 680 more words ]

Reflections: Revenge

Often, when we think of Biblical revenge, Exodus 21:23-25 comes to mind: "If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe." According to the Lutheran Study Bible, this was a common civil law during Biblical time that can be found in the legal codes of many ancient civilizations, including the law code of Hammurabi. Getting Even- the Right Way

By Richard Bauman The car that cut me off had a bumper sticker that read, “I don’t get mad, I get even!” For an instant that’s exactly what I felt—I wanted to get even with him for his dangerous maneuver. Then, almost reluctantly, I thought, “Why bother?” There was not way I could really “get even” with him. Who hasn’t said, “I’ll get even” or at least felt the boiling hot urge to “even the score” with a sibling, spouse, co-worker or even a stranger who acted offensively. [ 666 more words. ]

Carol decided to try an experiment. Several of her friends at work were giving up things for Lent and she decided to join them (even though her church didn’t practice Lent). The Greatest One Mile Race | The Online Home Of The Lutheran Digest

Read the inspirational story of Roger Bannister and John Landy, two runners whose training and hard work led to the "Mile of the Century."

Running sub-four minute miles isn’t uncommon for today’s world-class track stars, but until May 6, 1954, experts were certain humans couldn’t run a mile in less than four minutes.

The Missing 300 Years | The Online Home Of The Lutheran Digest

What happened in the world between the book of Joel and the birth of Jesus?

Christians and Jewish people alike share ignorance in common about what happened in Palestine in the 300 years between Joel – chronologically the last of the biblical prophets – and the birth of Jesus. Is it safe to say not much worth noting happened during that time? Hardly.

Jesus Is My Home Address

While staying with her daughter in Africa, a woman discovers that she's never far from home.

“I’ll be fine,” I assured them. But as I watched the taillights of their white Toyota disappear over the aloe-covered hillside, it suddenly hit me: “I am thousands of miles from home, and I don’t know anybody.”
