Our hope at .o.r.d.therapy is to bridge the gap between experience and understanding. On Tuesdays, I’ll be sharing insights, tips, resources, and perspectives for those eager to relate, understand, and support the loved ones who are hurt around them. Join us for and be part of the journey towards more profound empathy and care.

Trauma has no timetable. A familiar tune or scent can trigger a rush of memories.

Your Role As A Support: Stay calm and avoid drawing attention. Ask them what they need from you, or gently guide them to a quieter aisle. Check in with them, and ask if they need a moment or want to leave. Please don’t ask them to try to tell you what happened or what triggered them at that moment. Their nervous system is already firing on overdrive from getting hit. Trying to explain how they got hit at this point isn’t the priority,

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is not merely a condition, but a profound narrative of enduring repeated and prolonged traumatic events, often spanning one's formative years. Unlike traumas resulting from a single event, C-PTSD weaves its influence deeply into an individual's essence.

Many perceive attending therapy as a direct measure of someone's drive to "move past" their trauma. However, therapy, for many living with C-PTSD, isn't about achieving a "cure" or a cure it's-self. There is no cure. It's about garnering tools to better manage and understand its effects and how to help navigate through the days to come. Triggers and nightmares, painful as they are, may persist throughout a person's life, regardless of the therapeutic journey they embark upon.
The reality is that individuals with C-PTSD might always grapple with its effects to some degree.

Healing through complex ptsd isn’t so much about “overcoming,” but about learning, adapting, and evolving alongside it. Healing is often less about erasing the past and more about embracing a future with resilience, tools, and understanding.

Equating therapy to an end goal of "curing" C-PTSD is a misguided notion. Why is this important to understand? Someone isn't failing because they still struggle with CPTSD. They aren’t “not trying hard enough” if they have triggers or flare ups. There is no timeline as for when someone should be cured or over it either, one doesn’t exist.

The real narrative is recognizing the immense strength and courage required to face each day with C-PTSD, to endure the triggers, and to navigate the stormy seas of haunting nightmares. And to see how strong you/they are walking through each day pushing forward.

As allies, friends, and loved ones, let's avoid judgment. Let's extend compassion, understanding, and respect for the pace and path each individual chooses in their journey with C-PTSD.
