Dear Fellow Residents:

I hope all is well with you and your families.

This summer season has been one of the hottest on record and the worst among the biting horseflies. This particular fly hatches from larvae located in the marshes and it makes its way inland. The Village is going to be aggressively addressing this issue next week with a two-prompt approach which is outlined below:
The Village will be deploying, through our contractor, an entire spraying of a more effective solution across the boundary on village/residential properties, right before the marsh wetlands. This should provide relief from newly hatched horseflies attempting to make their way inland. Administration will reach out to property owners that are adjacent to these areas in an effort to coordinate access. The map below illustrates our response plan.

There is a very effective product that attracts horseflies and doesn't require any insecticide. It is a durable black balloon containing a sticky substance that is hung on a shepherd's stick. The village has ordered almost one hundred of these units. We will be deploying them to households that request them. Please contact Village Hall at 516-239-4600 or email [email protected] to have the village place one on your property.

Best Regards,

Mayor Samuel

Important meeting on Tuesday.

Dear Fellow Residents,

While I do not officially take office as your Mayor until July 1st, given the timing of some recent developments, and the many calls I received, I felt compelled to send this important notice.

In recent days, news has surfaced of a proposed development neighboring our village in North Lawrence, in the Town of Hempstead, west side of Lawrence Avenue, between Wanser Avenue and Mott Avenue, and east side of Lawrence Avenue between Mill Street and Mott Avenue.

The developer is Heatherwood and the project consists of 253 regular apartments, 60 affordable housing apartments, totaling 313 apartments. This project has been in the works with the Town of Hempstead for a number of years and was previously placed on hold due to a moratorium, which expired on June 18th, 2024.

I understand that this is alarming to our community and the vast impact it will have on Village resources. While this project is not on official Village of Lawrence jurisdiction, we must still have our concerns addressed and voices heard by the Town of Hempstead’s elected officials. Every voice matters. Therefore, I implore each and every resident to join us and attend the meeting at the Town of Hempstead.

The meeting will be held on July 2nd, 2024 at 10:30AM at the following address:

Town Meeting Pavilion/ Hempstead Town Hall
1 Washington Avenue
Hempstead, NY 11550

We are grateful to the Town of Hempstead for providing us with an opportunity to be heard and look forward to the meeting on July 2nd, 2024.

Sincerely,

Mayor-Elect
Samuel (Shlomo) Nahmias
