When the Arab vlogger, Nuseir advised Filipinos to be angry, I already got what he meant. To be angry simply means to be deeply concerned about the social problems and through social media, we can send a strong message to the Philippine Government to fix it.
Nuseir, popularly known as Nas Daily has been screaming for years for his stories to be accepted and validated. He seems to be angry, and perhaps wanted a change in the political and social environment of his own country.
Nas Daily creates content about current events and sensitive issues of several countries where he could get more viewers and followers. The Philippines has been his main target since he's very much aware that Filipinos are the world's top social media users.
Since his one-minute videos became viral in the Philippines, he gained millions of Filipino followers. At first, I was impressed by his story narration and his energy in delivering the message. He's got a strong personality trying to persuade people to listen to his story.
Yes, he has got lots of stories to tell. Some of it is his biases and personal opinion about sensitive issues and topics he covers or thrown at him.
Now, I don't follow him anymore, and that's even before the news about how he lured Apo Whang-od to sign a contract for his Nas Academy.
Apo Whang-od is a national living treasure of the Philippines. She's known as the last traditional tattoo artist of her tribe in the Cordillera region. Since then, she became an online sensation among Filipinos. Others would travel several hours just to reach her hometown and get a tattoo from Apo Whang-od herself.
I couldn't imagine how a start-up company, Nas Academy would exploit our National legend and treasure, Apo Whang-od for money and profit. This exploitation is like bait for Filipinos to be hooked to him.
I couldn't imagine the feelings of the Family of Apo Whang-od including the people in her village and fellow tribe. They are crying for injustice. They have been scammed by a foreign vlogger with a deal that's not clear to them.
The Philippine government must protect Indigenous People like Apo Whang-od. She has to be protected from abuses like the commercialization of her skills. She has to be protected from the scam of Nas Academy and Nas Daily.
Now, I believe Nuseir must be right when he said we Filipinos must be angry. And yes, we are really angry. We are angry about the exploitation and scam of Nas Daily and Nas Academy.
We don't need a global validation. We Filipinos must accept our own identity, our culture, and our heritage. We don't need foreign people to highlight our strengths and weaknesses displayed on a global stage. We don't need Nas Daily and Nas Academy whose intention is purely self-serving. He badly needs fame, money, and global admiration. His narcissistic personality is contributing to chaos and noise online.
What we Filipinos need is the support of fellow Filipinos who will respect and love each other regardless of our strengths, weaknesses, culture, and heritage. We Filipinos have proven and showcase to the world who we are. We are just enough. And with Nas Daily, enough is enough.
