Terry Suffredini To help as many engineers as possible find their own “sweet spot” personally, professionally, sp Are you currently are an engineer? Terry has been there.

(And listen up wannabe engineers or those who have somehow found yourself related to an engineer. You’re going to want to hear this, too!)

Do you want to get out of your current rut and move into an aspect of engineering that gets you excited again, that reminds you of why you became an engineer in the first place, and gives you a good reason to get out of bed every morning? Are you tired of bein

g in an area of engineering that is very cyclical and ready to find something that is more stable, but have no idea about how to make the transition? Maybe you’re looking for help in moving into a managerial position – or to become a better manager and leader? Or do you just want to learn how to get more done, be more productive, without losing your sanity in the process? If any of these apply, you’ve come to the right place. Terry Suffredini Atkinson, PE, herself a practicing Chemical Engineer, is fiercely committed to guiding fellow engineering professionals to achieve the highest level of success possible and to do so in a way that is fun, ethical, and fits with their unique value systems and skills sets. For the record, you CAN have the career of your dreams without driving yourself and those around you crazy! You’ve come to the right place if you are looking for a proven professional who can guide you to:

• Become aware of all the wonderful skills and experience you bring to the table
• Showcase them in a way that gets you noticed and respected, or even promoted
• Manage your time and activities so you can maximize your productivity with less stress and better results. You’ve also come to the right place if:

You have ever thought that having your ideal job would be the solution to all of your problems, and yet, you feel powerless to get there. Or if:

You have struggled for years in a position that feels like it is sucking the life out of you, that makes you feel you are wasting your talents, or that you are fighting against your natural inclinations all the time. With many years of experience working with amazing clients with similar worries and concerns and guiding them to achieve remarkable success, Terry’s mission and commitment is to improve the life and careers of fellow engineers so together we can continue to make a positive impact on the world around us. After all, it is the engineers who are responsible for all of the technological aspects of our modern world that most people now take for granted, and they’ll be the ones leading our world into the future as well. The world needs engineers at their best. Terry loves hearing the relief and excitement in my clients’ voices when they find their dream career; when they discover they don’t have to stay in the dead end position they’re currently in. She also loves seeing them come into their own, maximizing their gifts and strengths. Her path to becoming the Engineer’s Coach became clear as she continued to encounter engineers who were misunderstood, who were stuck in areas that held them back from utilizing all of their talents, skills and interests, who were young and felt like no one would hire them because they didn’t have enough experience, or even who wanted to get into business on their own and didn’t know how to make the transition. She has the solutions to these issues and more (or knows where to go to find the solution). She knows firsthand the frustration, the discouragement, the stress and health issues, the pain that comes from working day in and day out in an area that goes against one’s grain. She knows because she spent over twenty years in just such a situation, not knowing how to get out. Finally, she discovered the way and now wants to short-circuit that process for others so they don’t have to endure the same years of frustration and pain. What sets Terry apart from other coaches is that she understands engineers and how they think because she is one herself. It’s a fact that many coaches prefer NOT to work with engineers. Not Terry! She loves helping fellow engineers optimize their lives and careers. Her perspectives have been featured on radio, television and in PE Magazine, a publication of the National Society of Professional Engineers. Terry would love to guide you to achieve the results you desire. If you would like to learn more, she offers a complimentary 30-minute “Get on Track” strategy session. Are you faced with the challenge of making your public speaking talk more interesting to the audience?

I suggest you tell stories that your audience can relate to, and then tie the points of your presentation to those experiences to make them more captivating.

For example, let's say your talk is about safety regulations.

As soon as anyone mentions regulations of any type, most listeners start to tune out.

However, what if you were to show the benefit of the regulations by sharing a specific example or two of how someone's normal day became anything but normal when they got seriously injured – or worse - because they did not follow a regulation?

This brings the point home and will make the audience more likely to remember your talking points.

Maybe you’ve noticed that when you've been working in one arena for quite some time, potential hiring managers only want to consider you for that same type of work.

That’s fine if you like your line of work. If you don’t and want a change, here's my advice.

First, revamp your resume to focus on your accomplishments and transferable skills. Then, get involved in various organizations – personal and/or professional.

Just be out there among people, giving back. You never know who you might meet that could give you your chance to do something different. In the process of helping others, you also get to feel good about yourself. And oh yes, maybe also develop some new skills to add to your resume. Win win!

I actually got my opportunity to switch because I helped someone in a job search. He informed me that at his company they were hiring for a process design engineer.

Are you considering making a career transition?

Let me make a suggestion. Most resumes start with a job history. Be different! Start your resume and Linkedin profile with your most noteworthy accomplishments that highlight your transferrable skills. This way, a hiring manager is more likely to consider you for what you want to be doing, rather than just what your last job title(s) involved.

What I’ve learned over my career

The number one lesson I’ve learned in all my years of working in different jobs and fields as an engineer is you really need to aim for the kind of work that’s right for you. Make it your goal to find a career that makes you excited to get out of bed every morning.

If you don’t enjoy what you're doing, you're not going to be as productive as you could otherwise be. Everyone benefits when you love what you do for a living.

Should you get a PE (Professional Engineer) license?

It's becoming more important for engineers in every discipline to get their PE license. Having your license makes you more marketable and usually entitles you to a higher salary. This is especially true if you work for a government agency. Their salary structure is such that you remain an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) until you have your license. EITs are paid considerably less than PEs. A lot of private companies seem to be adopting a similar stance. So yes, get your license as soon as you can.

When you write your follow up email to a networking contact after an event, don't send a generic "nice to meet you" e-mail. Write something useful. Think about your conversation and put that into the email. You can include a link to an article on something you discussed. This way, you'll feel like less of a self-promoter.

When letting your social media networks know you’re looking for a job, be as specific as possible about the fields and job titles you want to pursue. By giving your contacts specific keywords, they can refer you to friends or companies who match those searches. For example, don’t say “mechanical engineer”, say “Avionics Mechanical Engineer”.
