Uganda Becomes The Fourth African Country to House Phone Assemble Plant .

A Chinese electronics firm Engo , has launched a phone manufacturing plant in Uganda. The plant will be located in Namanve, Uganda. Construction of the plant is expected to last six months. The facility will enable Uganda to improve its tax base and reduce imports bills

The firm has joined the industral sector to domestically manufacture and assemble mobile phones, iPad, laptops and computers. The project is expected to cost about $15.5 million over a period of five years. The company intends to have a production capacity of one million in the first year and hit the market before the end of 2019.

Ares Chow Yu Qing, Executive Director of ENGO Holdings Limited said, “We will do this step by step. We will use experienced Ethiopians until we have trained our own workforce. So we will start with 100,000 gadgets per month. For Computers, the target Computers is One Million a year – depending on demands. But we will bring more machines if the demands are high.”

“Uganda, for many years we have been depending on Imported ICT gadgets such as computers and mobile phone which do not add any value to our economy. With the coming up of the Chinese Investors we shall be locally assembling our Mobile phones and computers this will make the prices for gadgets more lower compare to the current price,” the Minister for Information Communication and National Guidance Frank Tumwebaze commenting on the development said

However, a few smartphones had been assembled in Africa: South Africa’s Onyx released the first African-made smartphone, Egypt’s SICO produced the Nile X and Rwanda owns the first phone factory in Africa. These new developments in Africa will advance the continent’s information technology sector.

Uganda now being the second African country to own a phone factory with Rwanda being the first. In some other African countries, smartphones are being assembled like South Africa and Egypt where Onyx smartphones are made and Nile X by SICO respectively.

The Job App Could Help Tackle Unemployment In South Africa .

A South African job app “MrEmploy,” has just been launched to connect job seekers in South Africa to employers. The app through its automated process is aimed at making employment processes faster and easier, and also helps to link applicants to their aspiring employers .

According to the managing director of MrEmploy, Mr Ryan Oettle said “MrEmploy is an advanced smart matching system that speeds up recruiting. For employers, saves time and reduces the risk of hiring the wrong person. While for employees, it links them to the kinds of jobs they are best suited for.”

The app also allows for fifteen-second video uploads, Apart from the basic upload of a picture and a standardized Micro CV. This video helps the applicant create a better first impression and also saves the employer the time they would have spent checking CVs, doing phone interviews as well as reducing face-to-face meetings. It helps the employer decide whether they want to meet a candidate.

MrEmploy which is can be referred to as “Tinder for jobs,” unlike other job apps, allows job seekers to see only jobs they are qualified for and can give a thumbs-up if they are interested in. The employers also confirm the applicants they think fit the position by similarly giving a thumbs-up.

MrEmploy could go a long way in complementing government efforts to tackle this, the South Africa’s youth unemployment rate of 27.6% is one of the largest in the world, So far the government already provides public employment programmes for those who cannot get a job.

The app also helps in easing the application and selection processes by bridging the gap between applicants and employers.

Mr Oettle added that the app is ideal for any businesses type and as such, would provide a wide range of jobs across different sectors in the country. Additionally, the app is free for job seekers but employers have to pay a fee of R100 per job upload. Over 70 employers and 1200 prospective applicants directly use the job app.

Technology will always remain relevant . Way to go South Africans .

Nairobi faults poor health services for high neonatal mortality rate .

Half of newborns in Nairobi lack access to quality healthcare, resulting in high mortality rates of an average 39 deaths per 1,000 live births, according to a new report despite the fact that the county hosts a tenth of the county’s healthcare workforce and facilities raising concerns about the quality of services rendered.

A study by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) Welcome Trust showed that only about 44 percent of 24,000 seriously-ill children in Nairobi get access to quality healthcare.

“This means about 44 per cent of all seriously-ill newborns are given care in a facility that is not suitable at all or do not reach a facility at all, perhaps helping to explain Nairobi’s high neonatal mortality,” the report says.

The neonatal period; the first 28 days of a child’s life contributes nearly 45 per cent of the death of children under five. Kenya’s child mortality is currently at 22 deaths per 1,000 live births and Nairobi records the highest number.

The study showed that only 33 hospitals are able to offer care to the babies, but this is not even encouraging because “of these 33 facilities only four are public but they provide 71 per cent of all existing inpatient neonatal care”.

Rachel Musoke, a professor of neonatal health at the University of Nairobi’s paediatric department: “At that stage, they cannot regulate their own body temperature, so they lose all the water through the skin and die of dehydration. They cannot eat so food has to be given through a pipe and they pick diseases very fast.”

There are in electric cots (incubators), which must keep the temperature and humidity within survival range so they do not die of dehydration and fed through their veins.

The babies also “forget to breathe” because their brains are not fully developed to coordinate these functions. They turn blue, start foaming and a nurse has to be there at that very moment to “remind him to breathe They are stimulated by touching, and sometimes resuscitated if they do not remember to breathe,” explains Prof Musoke.

Nairobi records 132,025 births annually, and one in each five of these children would need neonatal care to save their lives until they move past this dangerous stage, according to the study.

The author noted: “Most births and episodes of serious neonatal illness occur in the densely populated, low-income areas in Nairobi.”Children end up in this stage for many reasons that can be traced back to a failed health system, which includes improper management of pregnancy where the mother has long labor.

“They stay long in the tummy, and swallow meconium (their own poisonous p**p) that gets into their lungs, and has to be painfully removed by a doctor. Between 1990 and 2009, 79 million neonates died globally, according to data from an agency dealing with child-related issues United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef). Ninety-eight per cent of these deaths occurred in low-income countries such as Kenya. The UNICEF urges for universal health coverage to help deal with infant mortality with focus on four main pillars including; functional health facilities, with electricity and clean water, midwives and other health workers equipped with training and tools, life-saving drugs and equipment.

Tony Elumelu Joins World Leaders to initiate U.S. Growth Strategy for Palestine .
United Bank for Africa (UBA) chairman and founder of Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) Tonyelumelufoundation , yesterday, joined other global leaders to launch the US growth strategy for Palestine and the Middle East.

This is the first step in the long journey towards establishing an enduring future for the Middle East region, the West Bank, Gaza, and beyond, the growth strategy was launched at the Peace to Prosperity Workshop in Bahrain, organised by the Presidency of the United States of America in partnership with the host government, the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Elumelu spoke on the opening plenary alongside Christine Lagarde, Managing Director, International Monetary Fund (IMF); and HE Mohammed Al-Sheikh, Minister of State & Member of the Council of Ministers, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to share practical recommendations to unlock future economic prosperity for the Palestinian people.

The directions were based on what is done at Tony Elumelu Foundation as a replicable model for the economic empowerment of young men and women from the West Bank and Gaza.

Tony Elumelu stressed the urgency and importance of supporting and empowering young Palestinians to ignite the entrepreneurial ecosystem and strengthen the Palestinian economy.

He said, “I come from Africa; and the reality is that we do have a lot of similarities with the Palestinian people; especially in the area of demographic makeup. With over 60 percent of its nearly five million-strong population under 30, the young people of Palestine need jobs. Without jobs, there will be no economic hope. Big corporations and government alone cannot supply the jobs demanded by Palestine’s demographic pressures. We need SMEs and startups to address joblessness in the region, create jobs and opportunities in local communities for millions of our Palestinian young brothers and sisters to become employed, meaningfully engaged, and full of economic hope, which in turn leads them away from extremism.

10 Ways To Raise Capital For Your Small Business.

10 Guaranteed Ways Of Raising Capital For Small Business
Raising capital for a start-up is unarguably one of the biggest obstacles many entrepreneurs face in starting a business.

Here are ways to scale the huddle.

So you have a business idea or you want to venture into an existing sector, you have mapped out
your strategy and drawn the projections. You are confident this is the next big thing; it is burning
inside of you and you just can’t wait to kick start that business. But what is holding you back?
Capital. This is perhaps the greatest challenge to many business-minded people and has succeeded in killing many businesses even before they start.

Here are 10 guaranteed tested and trusted ways you can raise capital for your business.
Good luck on you business venture and see you on the league of success!

1. INVEST FROM YOUR PERSONAL SAVINGS: if your idea is as brilliant as you claim it is, then you should have no issues committing your personal savings into it. It is true that this would work best for people who are (or were) in a paid employment and have been able to save up some funds over time. It is easier for people to support your business when they see something on ground already. Something you have already started on your own.

2. APPROACH CLOSE FRIENDS AND FAMILY: this cannot be emphasized enough; your closed friends and family are the next point of call in raising funds for a small business. You need to talk to people who know, love, trust and believe in you. It is true that this may sometimes be two-ways because friends and family sometimes tend to communize your concepts and allow familiarity cloud their judgment on issues such as this; but it is worth a try, isn’t it?

3. FINANCIAL PARTNERSHIP: sometimes, to achieve your dreams, you may have to give up sole control of it and bring in someone who is willing to support you financially in return for some stake in the business venture. Do not be scared to explore this option because it is a good way to get the financial backing you seek. However, before you explore this option, make sure you have all partnership agreements, stakes, benefits, etc. clearly stated out through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by all parties involved.

4. ANGEL INVESTORS: Yes, angels are real! Angel investors are usually informal business people or high net-worth professionals who are looking for high return investments. Don’t be deceived though, some of them are very experienced entrepreneurs and business moguls who will critically bisect your business idea and unveil loopholes in your ‘perfect idea’. Although funding from Angel investors is great, they often demand a high stake from the business in return from their funding. Every wealthy person you know is a potential angel investor; do not be scared to approach them.

5. APPLY FOR SMALL BUSINESS GRANTS: Grants are non-repayable funds or products disbursed by one party (grant makers), often a government department, corporation, foundation or trust, to a recipient, often (but not always) a non-profit entity, educational institution, business or an individual. You must have a good business plan and must have done your home work thoroughly to enable you earn a grant. There are alot of grant opportunities for small businesses available online.

6. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR ASSESTS: Assets refer to properties or things of value that you own. Many of us own high value assets which we can actually do without (at least for the main time). Assets like expensive jewelry, extra cars, houses, lands, etc can be taken advantage of when in need of capital for a small business. It is true that emotional attachments often serve as stumbling blocks in using assets as collateral for loans or exchange for capital, but if you truly believe in your business dream, you would make the move.
7. GET ADVANCE FROM CUSTOMERS: this is one of the ways of starting a business on zero capital, but it is most times only possible in the case of buying and selling or supply. Customers who are urgently in need for a product are sometimes willing to pay an upfront before supply is made. However, this is mostly possible when they are people you know and can vouch for your credibility. Again, approach customers from your circle when exploring this option.

8. APPLY FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP COMPETITIONS: there are a lot of African entrepreneurs who have been able to raise funds for the businesses by applying for and winning entrepreneurship competitions. Local and international organizations put these competitions together to encourage and boost small businesses. You will find loads of such opportunities on the internet. In exploring this option, do not be scared or feel discouraged when you do not win, keep trying….

9. CROWDFUNDING: Crowd funding is a new and fast growing way of raising finance for businesses, it is also referred to as crowd financing. Although this is not a new approach, it has been greatly enhanced by the internet. It involves raising money (although in small bits) from large number of people who believe in your concept. There is another version of crowd funding which allows interested investors to offer you capital for which you will pay back with interest. Search the internet for crowd funding opportunities.

10. APPROACH YOUR BANK: Banks have become notorious for saying ‘NO’ and giving the weirdest excuses why they cannot support loan application and funding for small businesses. However, you must understand that banks are very interested in giving loans because that is often where the bulk of their profit comes from. So, do not get tired of approaching them! It is often advisable to try and raise some funds on your own and start something before approaching the banks because they may be more interested in growing a business venture with potentials and good returns rather than support one that has not started.
So, do not be discouraged! Explore one, two or all of the above options and start your business today!\

World Malaria Day; The Cause Of Malaria and Preventive Measures Against the Disease .
*
World Malaria Day is a day set aside to create an awareness of the life threatening disease and to recognize other effort globally.
*
This day is celebrated every year all over the world on April 25th .
According to the world health organization World Health Organization (WHO) ‘urgent action is needed to get the global response to malaria back on track and ownership of the challenge lie in the hands of countries most affected by malaria’.
*
The theme for this year world malaria day is ‘Zero malaria starts with me’, prevention of this life threatening disease starts with our effort as individuals.
_
will be looking at what causes malaria and some ways to prevent this heart threatening disease.
*
Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite. The parasite can be spread to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes.
*
There are many different types of Plasmodium parasite, but only 5 types cause malaria in humans.
*
*
These are:
1) Plasmodium falciparum– mainly found in Africa, it’s the most common type of malaria parasite and is responsible for most malaria deaths worldwide
2) lasmodium vivax – mainly found in Asia and South America, this parasite causes milder symptoms than Plasmodium falciparum, but it can stay in the liver for up to 3 years, which can result in relapses .
3) Plasmodium ovale – fairly uncommon and usually found in West Africa, it can remain in your liver for several years without producing symptoms
4) Plasmodium malariae – this is quite rare and usually only found in Africa.
5) Plasmodium knowles -- this is very rare and found in parts of southeast Asia.

Preventive Measures against malaria are as follows;-

Mosquito Nets– The best way to keep your family safe from mosquitoes at night is to use mosquito nets over your beds. Not only does it ensure 100% protection but is also a chemical-free way to keep mosquitoes at bay.
Close your windows after sunset– Mosquitoes enter your home mostly after sunset. So, make sure your windows are closed then. You can also consider getting nets made to fit your windows.
Wear full clothes– Till the mosquito-based disease period is over, consider wearing light coloured full sleeves/legs clothes.
Keep your surroundings clean– Keep your surroundings clean. Ensure your home is mopped every day with excess water around you treated at the earliest.
Malaria repellent foods– Not exactly repellent, by some foods are known for their properties which helps your body cope with infections before it damages your immune system further. It includes lemonade, cinnamon powder, basil leaves, fenugreek seeds, garlic, grapefruit, etc. Include these foods in your diet.
*
*
*
As we celebrate World Malaria Day, keep in mind that the way to having Zero Malaria in the world begins with you.

NNPC Affirms the Price of Fuel-N145 Per Litre !!!

In spite of increased in cost of petroleum products, Premium Motor Spirit will continue to sell at N145 per litre, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has said.

In an interview with our source, NNPC Group General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, said that the NNPC would bear the cost of under-recovery of petrol through other sources.

“The Federal Government has made it clear; petrol will continue to sell at N145 per litre. NNPC is not operating subsidy. What we have done is under-recovery of which we make up from other sources.

“Yes, the under-recovery will continue. The corporation plays many roles in the country. We are an importer of the last resort where others refuse to import.

“We equally operate in a social regime to make sure that the system gets wet with products because if the corporation is not doing that as part of its responsibilities, you can imagine what the system will look like” he said.

NNPC object the statement that it had spent $22bn on the Brass LNG project.

Ughamadu affirmed that the corporation had spent $1.2bn on the project. He emphasized that the corporation made the clarification at the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating the expenditure.

The statement quoted the General Manager, New LNG Venture of the NNPC, Ahmed Dikko said, “This sum included the cost of acquiring project land, which covers approximately 606 hectares, cost of early works contract, Front End Engineering Design, Pre-FEED Concept Evaluation Study, Project Environmental Impact Assessment comprising both onshore and offshore studies, dredging, EIA activities and ambient noise survey, displacement and settlement action plan, cultural site heritage study, staff and administration project cost from inception, and sustainable development cost, among others” he said.
