Tucker Snow-Cat Along with the military version, the Tucker Snow-Cat has a variety of applications including farming, grooming, and search and rescue. This unique-looking vehicle has four articulated tracks to provide exceptional traction in steep terrain and harsh conditions, as well as the ability to traverse wide crevices. The cab is also optimized for use in harsh conditions as well as sub-zero weather. The Snow-Cat can be fitted with one of three different tracks depending on the environment it’s being used in and workload. One of its key features is that the tracks can be tilted up or down to provide an inclined ramp. Prices for a military Sno-Cat are in the $15,000 to $20,000 range.

Alvis Stalwart Known by British servicemen as the “Stolly,” the Alvis Stalwart is a 6-wheel drive amphibious military vehicle. The Stolly served in the British military beginning in 1966 and ending in 1980. It features a 5-ton hydraulic crane and a winch, and has drop-down sides for easy cargo loading. The Stalwart is equipped with an 8-cylinder Rolls Royce engine and can tow up to 10 tons. It can travel at about 6 knots in water thanks to its propulsion units. Due to its bevel gears, driving on firm surfaces can damage the vehicle. You can expect to pay around 30 grand for one of these large amphibious trucks.

Renault Sherpa Used extensive by NATO and the French military, the Sherpa is the European version of the very popular Hummer. Like the Hummer, it’s used for tactical missions such as patrol and scouting. The Sherpa is fitted with a 215-horsepower engine and has a top speed of 75 miles per hour. With its high ground clearance, there’s no obstacle this vehicle can’t cross and no hill too steep to climb. Four-door SUV and and 2-door pickup variants of the Sherpa were built to accommodate different needs. Though the price tag for one of these humvee-like vehicles is typically about a quarter of a million dollars, you can find older ones for much cheaper.

Armstrong MT500 The MT500 was developed by the British military for use in the Falklands War in 1982. Production rights for the motorcycle were sold to Harley Davidson 5 years later. Equipped with a Rotax 481.3 cc engine, the bike generates 32 horsepower and has a top speed of about 90 mph. The MT500 is reliable and handles well both on and off the road. Most are kickstart models, but there are a few electric-start models still around that were used by the Canadian and Jordanian armies. These motorcycles are quite rare. If you’re lucky enough to find one, you can expect to pay about $15,000.

Volvo TP21 Sugga The TP21 traces its roots back to Volvo’s PV800 Series, a taxicab produced by Volvo beginning in 1938. The successor to the TPV off-road military vehicle, the TP21 maintains the taxicab saloon design of the PV800, but is obviously much more rugged. It was given the nickname “Sugga”, meaning “sow” in Swedish, because its rear body resembles that of a pig’s. Due to its off-road prowess and reliability, the TP21 became the workhorse of the Swedish military in the 1950s. TP21s are fairly rare, as only 700 were made. They typically cost around $25,000.

Oshkosh L-ATV If you thought Humvees were tough, take a look at the next generation of light-combat all-terrain vehicles: The Oshkosh L-ATV. The L-ATV was designed to fulfill the military’s need for a lighter vehicle that could go where the Humvee couldn’t, but that could also offer protection from mine ambushes—a major concern in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. A notably bigger vehicle than the Humvee, the L-ATV will come in two-seat support combat and four-passenger combat variations. It offers the protection of a light tank, but can travel over rough terrain much faster than the M-ATV, and can even reach speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour over smoother ground. A civilian version of the L-ATV is currently in production and will set you back about a quarter of a million dollars if you simply must have it.

The TerrainArmor edition of this military ATV can absorb .50-caliber gunshots and run over a railroad spike or two and still get a full load to its destination. An all-wheel drive vehicle, the 850’s two-cylinder engine can generate 77 horsepower. The MV850 can carry up to 400 pounds of cargo and the back and up to 200 pounds in the front. Another key feature is the 3,000-pound fixed front winch. This high-performance ATV has a price tag of around $15,000.

Dodge WC51 The WC51 was a 3/4-ton weapons carrier used in World War II. The pickup could be fitted with an M24A1 machine gun mount holding a Browning automatic rifle or machine gun. Several other models were created using the WC51 chassis including ambulances, maintenance vehicles, and reconnaissance vehicles. One variation, the WC52, is identical to the WC51 with the exception of a winch in front. One of the most famous military cars, the WC was known for its ability to handle muddy roads. Over 100,000 WC51s were produced, and their popularity makes them a popular restoration project for military enthusiasts. WC51 Prices can range from around 5 to 35K.

Humvee All Hummer civilian vehicles are based on the design of the original military Humvee. The first Humvees were built without body armor, as they were mainly used for transport behind enemy lines, but upgrades were later made so they could withstand small arms fire. One of the key differences between the military and civilian version of the Humvee is that the military version is water-tight and can be fitted with a snorkel so it can actually drive fully submerged. There have been over 280,000 Humvees built, making them the most widely used military vehicles since the 1980s. Due to the large amount of Humvees being phased out by the military, it is relatively easy to buy one, though you will have to jump through some hoops to get it registered. Humvees are currently being auctioned off by the government with bids starting between $4,000 and $35,000.
