2.4H of Singapore was a fun experience and we had a taste of endurance racing, where we were always kept on our toes to ensure driver changes and fuel stops were done well to minimise any loss of time. Our trio including .driven and did this to perfection, and we escaped any penalties too. Alas, I didn’t get my podium dream but we did OK. I had a bit of a reality check that my dad bod and age have really caught up and I’m just not as fast as I was anymore.

There’s no ‘downtime’ in the 2.4H and as grueling as it is, I can’t imagine doing it for 24H at Le Mans! My son is eager to have his turn behind the wheel soon, reckon he should be a better driver than I am with an earlier start - soon!

Think my friends thought I was a little kooky when I said the Hyundai Avante Hybrid is the most impressive car I’ve driven this year (if not one of the most), especially for Singapore road conditions. But I still stand by what I said. It’s a pity that it bears the brunt of high COE prices; it used to be a sub-$100k car, albeit not as a hybrid. Still, I’d wholeheartedly recommend it. If we return to a decent gulf between Cat A and Cat B COE again, this car may have a lucky break.

Two firsts for my recent flight to Europe.

One was a pre-departure pilot announcement in Singapore saying we will be flying over Iraq and ‘as of now’ it should be safe. But the plane was fueled full in case there was a need to divert to a safe route or airport, which the flight on the previous day did, to Sofia. He continued that they were in touch with embassies and if things change in flight, they will inform us. That was a little unnerving.

The other was during the return flight. An announcement was made about an hour into the flight that we were going over ‘restricted airspace’ in 40 minutes and telecommunications will be switched off. Oddly they said that toilets could not be used over the flight zone and we had to stay belted up. Nonetheless, I slept through it and when I woke up, the flight tracker shows the plane was still in the Middle East (Israel or Jordan?), even though we were just 2 hours away from Singapore. Wonder what happened there?

Both very real reminders of how things happening around the world may affect us. Thankful to be back home safe. Stay vigilant everyone and make every day count.

The Aion Y Plus at $145,988 looks compelling as one of the cheapest EVs around to date in the Singapore market.

It offers heaps of space, has decent 563 km of range and has the practical form factor that plays to the Singaporean mindset.

Aion being a JV partner for Toyota and Honda for several decades has filtered down to its engineering philosophy as well, and it has shown from its reliability ratings (top in some authoritative lists in China), its innovation (bulletproof battery cell!) and intensive pre-launch testing.

In person I was really impressed with the razor thin panel gaps of its bodywork, which is a sign of the car’s build quality. Really looking forward to trying this on the road soon!

Another throwback. My late 爷爷’s Mini (Minor?) involved in what looks like a minor altercation with a cabbie. Must have been a stressful situation then, but what a memory it is now that I could reminisce upon!

This Mini famously had a hole so big in its footwell, my dad retold that he could literally do a Flintstones with the car.
