Rene Danika X Vacant Assembly X HEAVY MEDDLE FILMS
Presented at West End’s (2-4 October, 2020),
‘Left // Right’ was a series of site-specific installations by Brisbane artist René Danika. Through materiality, symbolism and immersive environments, Danika examines political extremism, inherited philosophies and morality. By positioning the viewer within the work, ‘Left // Right’ asks us to consider our own relationship with these themes.
Growing up in a military-family dynamic, Danika works with materials that are emblematic of her experiences. An evolving body of work, ‘Left // Right’ references Danika’s personal symbolism – flowers as grief, bitumen as structure and foundation, ornate frames as confinement and tape as the quick fix. In this series, reclaimed taxidermy, faux fur and bitumen are saturated with black acrylic spray and body-like surface investigations. The toxicity of her materials is deliberate and used as a framework for contemplation
