The Talib Bensoda vs. Yankuba Dabo Saga
Talib and Yankuba Dabo represent two distinct personalities within the United Democratic Party (UDP), particularly when it comes to their commitment to the party's cultural and political values.
Yankuba has been at the forefront of UDP advocacy for most of his life. As a lawyer in the UK, he has represented many Gambians in asylum cases. One of my sisters benefited from his exceptional legal skills; we all thought her case would not succeed until Yankuba stepped in at the end and saved it.
Talib emerged as a prominent figure in the UDP in 2018. Publicly, he has significantly broadened the party's base by attracting independents, which has helped him win the KMC elections twice.
A critical question for the UDP is what they are looking for in their next flag bearer or party leader. This brings us to the personalities of Talib and Yankuba.
Without a doubt, Talib has a better chance of reforming the UDP to make it more liberal. His approach could expand the party's base by appealing to independents, thus changing the UDP's traditional political culture and values as a party of resistance.
On the other hand, Yankuba’s track record speaks for itself; however, he is unlikely to take any action to reform the UDP. For Yankuba, the party must continue its traditional politics of resistance and uphold its “Mandinka roots”. His recent comments have demonstrated that he is not a politician who shies away from expressing his views, whether in public or private. He is someone who speaks his mind, regardless of the setting.
In conclusion, if Talib leads the UDP, the party will undergo significant changes, and the indigenous UDP supporters will either need to accept the reform or consider forming their own party.
The dilemma lies in the UDP's willingness to change. If they choose a leader who might not be committed to their traditional politics and subsequently lose the next presidential election, the future of the party could be at great risk.
If the UDP believes they need reform to expand their base, Talib is the ideal choice. Conversely, if they prefer to maintain a defiant leader who will continue the fight the UDP is known for, Yankuba Dabo is the answer.
A closer examination of the Brikama Area Council and the individuals who campaigned with Yankuba, compared to those who led Talib's campaign in KMC, will provide insight into the two personalities and their commitment to the UDP's indigenous politics.
The UDP has some serious soul-searching to do.
