The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Maiduguri Chapter, in collaboration with Engr. Kori Shettima, FNSE, FNICE, Special Adviser to His Excellency, the Governor of Borno State on Works, successfully commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child and Scholarship Awards at Yerwa Government Girls Secondary School, Maiduguri, on Saturday, 11th October 2025.
The event, themed “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontline in Crises,” brought together students, educators, and professional engineers to inspire and empower young girls to embrace education, leadership, and innovation in STEM.
During the event, the APWEN Maiduguri Chapter Chairperson, Engr. Hajju Tijjani Gazali MNSE, FNIEE, donated 20 school bags filled with exercise books to support students’ learning and motivate them to remain focused and determined in their educational journey. She encouraged the girls to dream big, work hard, and see engineering and science as pathways for transforming their communities.
The event also featured goodwill messages, scholarship presentations, and motivational talks from distinguished guests. In her goodwill remark, Engr. Kori Shettima reaffirmed her commitment to advancing girls’ education and empowerment, announcing a donation of ₦1.1 million and a large consignment of exercise books to support the students of Yerwa Government Girls Secondary School.
The occasion was graced by the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Maiduguri Branch Engr.Jidda Amma, members of APWEN Maiduguri Chapter, and other dignitaries who reiterated their dedication to promoting girl-child education and inclusion in STEM fields.
In her appreciation remarks, the Principal of Yerwa Government Girls Secondary School, Hajiya Fatima Muhammad Dauda, expressed deep gratitude to APWEN Maiduguri Chapter and Engr. Kori Shettima for choosing the school as the host venue for this year’s celebration. She commended their unwavering efforts toward empowering girls and promoting STEM education, noting that the program has rekindled hope and ambition among her students.
APWEN Maiduguri Chapter extends special appreciation to Engr. Aisha Gazali, MNSE, MNICE, for her steadfast commitment and coordination efforts, as well as to Engr. Halima Baba Dauda, MNSE, MNICE, for her active involvement in ensuring the success of the program. Their teamwork and dedication contributed immensely to the smooth ex*****on and impact of this year’s celebration.
