Your 5th ranked Hornets are crushing the competition and it doesnt look like they are going to be stopped anytime soon. With 11 games in just 9 days and showing no sign of fatigue, they have outscored opponents 155-22. Their only loss on the season came from Division 2 Coopersville on Saturday. They have had many highlights from those games with homers by Samson, Allen and a grand slam by Brielle Bailey. Wednesday night they beat visiting Centreville. Ally Butler got the win on the mound. Cienna Nightingale mowed down 2 runners at second behind the plate. Rowan Allen ignited a double play fielding the ball, taking it to second where Brooke Gerth got the out at second, then rifled it to Brielle Bailey at first. Ally Butler hit the ball over the fence for a first inning home run to help her team start a long rally. Rowan Allen nailed another home run to make it three games in a row with the long ball. The Hornets are back in action today at home against Climax.

Mendon Softball started the season strong this week with a 5-0 record. The Hornets pounded Hartford in a double header, 11-1 and 11-2 in the season opener. Rowan Allen had 13 strikeouts and three walks giving up only 2 hits. Ally Butler had 6 strikeouts, 1 walk and allowed 4 hits on the mound. Mattea Bingaman had a triple and a double on the night and Rowan Allen had two triples. Cierra Nightingale belted out a double as well. Brielle Bailey had 6 RBI between the two games and a host of other Hornets had multiple hits on the night. In Saturday, the Hornets traveled to Holton trying to repeat as back to back champions. They met a tough Hillman team to start the day. Mendon would strike first and scatter runs throughout the game to win the contest, 4-0. Rowan Allen got the win in the circle with 9 strikeouts and allowed only 4 hits. Jadyn Samson and Mattea Bingaman both doubled for the Hornets. They met Alcona next, beating them 10-1. Ally Butler was in the circle for Mendon and struck out 15 and only allowed 1 walk. The Hornets started quick by scoring 2 runs right away and added 3 more runs in each of the 5th and 6th innings. Rowan Allen, Kaidee Gonser and Brielle Bailey each had 2 RBI a piece. The Hornets played Beal City in the finals. They took the contest 10-7. Rowan Allen threw 5.3 innings and had 8 strikeouts for the win. Jadyn Samson closed out the final 1.1 innings and got the save. Kaidee Gonser, Ally Butler and Jadyn Samson all doubled in the championship game and each had 2 RBI as did Cienna Nightingale. The Hornets once again raised the trophy in Holton. Mendon plays at home against Galesburg on Monday. I look to see the state rankings change a bit after this strong start.

The Mendon Hornets Girls Basketball team made it into the history books making it to just the second quarterfinals appearance for the program. Mendon took on a very talented and experienced Fowler team at Gobles Tuesday night. Fowler is no stranger to this level of play with back to back state titles in 2021 and 2022. You could see the confidence and intensity as soon as the ball hit the floor. The Eagles would start red hot taking an 11-0 run to start the game. Fowler would score 23 points in the first quarter shooting lights out from the three point line. Mendon struggled against the Eagles full court press and physicality. Fowler was able to use that to create turnovers and convert them into points. Mendon would score a buzzer beating three pointer by Jadyn Samson to end the first quarter with a score of 5-23. The Hornets would gather themselves and mount a run of their own outscoring the Eagles in the second quarter. They would cut the lead to half before going into the locker room down 15-30. The second half continued to be a physical battle on both ends of the court. The Hornets took advantage of a few fast break opportunities and gave it all they had until the last buzzer sounded. It would not be enough to defeat the Eagles. Fowler defeated the Hornets 51-32. Brielle Bailey had 7 points and 2 rebounds. Senior, Makennah Mullin had 12 points and 3 rebounds in her last game for the Hornets. Jenna Scheffler, also a senior, registered one rebound in her final appearance. The bulk of the Hornet team will be back next year and will use the experience to make another deep run. Makennah and Jenna made their marks on the team and will be greatly missed next season.

Regional Champs!!
The Mendon Hornet Girls Basketball team is headed to the quarter finals after a battle with Concord. They came away with the win, 47-43. The Hornets would capitalize on free throws and pure grit on the court. It was a physical game and Mendon used that to their advantage sinking several critical free throws in the remaining minutes to put the game away. It was a four point game at the half in favor of the Hornets at 20-16. The second half was a race between the two teams. Both teams were aggresive and Mendon would struggle a bit getting the ball in bounds in the later stages of the game. After a timeout to regroup it would be Jadyn Samson, using her softball abilities to throw a strike to Makennah Mullin who took the ball to the hoop and ignited the team. Jadyn Samson and Cienna Nightingale took turns at the free throw line after several fouls against Concord. The girls would make the Yellow Jackets pay. Cienna would put the final daggers in by hitting both of her attempts and making it a 4 point game with 9 seconds left. Concord could not recover. Makennah Mullin and Jadyn Samson each had 11 points.
