Fandom Femmes Origins

Our first episode released on August 31, 2020, but the story of Fandom Femmes actually began at Anime Expo 2019. We met while we were both part of the cast of AX After Hours. We trained together for a few months before taking the After Hours stage in July 2019. That weekend, we bonded over our similar interests and senses of humor, and ultimately found out that people in their mutual circles thought we’d be great friends! We had so much fun talking about fandom and being silly backstage that we wanted to record our conversations.

Fast forward to today and we are 12.5 episodes strong! We’ve brought on some amazing guests to continue the conversation and tackle new topics, and we are so grateful for all your support!

To our Fandom Femmily,

We hope you all are feeling cared for in these challenging times.

The recent attacks against the Asian community in the U.S. have left us feeling devastated and heartbroken. As a podcast powered by Asian femme creativity, we knew we wanted to say something about it, but we wanted to take the time to heal and process for ourselves and with our loved ones before coming together and sharing a statement of how we want to respond and how we envision Fandom Femmes moving forward in light of this.

We first want to condemn these acts of anti-Asian violence, specifically violence against Asian women. The way that local law enforcement has minimized them proves that white supremacy is prevalent in our communities and devastating communities of color.

Secondly, we want to use our platform to carry out our role in the movement. We understand that in social movements, there are multiple ways to respond to respond and get involved. Some may feel called to share resources on social media. Others may want to sign petitions and organize direct actions. Some may be in positions of power to create and change laws that protect the community. At Fandom Femmes, we pride ourselves in using our intersecting identities to have fun and lighthearted conversations about diversity in our favorite fandoms and feel that our role in this movement is to provide a place of joy, healing, and rest for the impacted folks that need it.

We understand that amid these racist attacks, social media has become saturated with triggering headlines and images and finding a break from it all may seem impossible so we want to continue to make you laugh, warm your heart, and find rest amid these challenging times.

We are looking forward to making more episodes for us and for you and continuing to build this amazing community.

Be you, be free, and remember you always have a community here at Fandom Femmes.

Love,

Justine and Noelle
