A few glimpses from the singalong screening of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” on Wednesday night celebrating the 50th anniversary of the troupe’s introduction to U.S. audiences on KERA TV. We loved the dedication to character in the costume contest! 🐰
'Monty Python and the Flying Circus' will air on KERA once again
"Monty Python and the Flying Circus" on KERA TV 📺 Several episodes will air the rest of this month starting SATURDAY, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. Check kera.org/tv/schedule (search the word "Monty") to see all broadcast times!
Why are we airing episodes of the Flying Circus?
In this video, actor John Cleese talked to us about the risk KERA TV took airing the series in 1974, the first U.S. television station to do so. "When the series was offered to Dallas, it had been turned down in every major city in America – New York, L.A., Chicago ... everywhere," he said.
He recalled being told that then-KERA program director Ron Devillier was receiving calls from supporters the next morning essentially asking, "Well, did they burn the station down? Were you stoned on the way to work?" The answer: No. Viewers loved it. After, the troupe's brand of comedy caught fire across America.
"If it hadn't been picked up by that marvelous, marvelous man of yours, we probably would never have been heard of," Cleese said. "That's the debt we owe to you in Dallas, [to] KERA and that wonderful, wonderful man." ❤️

Terry Gilliam & Michael Palin on Monty Python's relationship with KERA TV
In 1974, KERA's Program Director Ron Devillier brought the British comedy show “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” to Channel 13, making KERA the first television station in the U.S. to broadcast the program 📺 In this video, Monty Python's Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin reflect on the troupe's U.S. origins, right here in Dallas, in 1974!
