In high school, at our regional cross country meet, I took a bad fall. It was no small deal. It was *falling-down-a-huge-hill-in-a-pack-of-150-runners-with-spikes-on* bad. I rolled, head over heels, until I came to rest at the side of the course. As I was falling, and for a few moments after I came to a stop, I felt quite disoriented. I had to get my bearings, stand back up, and start running again. I did not have - by far - my best time in a race that day. But what I did do? Finish the race.

Mental health issues can give us that same disorienting feeling. One minute you're running just fine, the next you are falling in a situation you feel you have no control over. But that fall doesn't define you - Christ does. So get back up, get your bearings, and finish the race. How do I know you can? If you follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives inside you.

EPISODE 10
The latest episode is a recording of a breakout session I did at the Rural Matters Institute's Virtual Summit in October titled "The Stigma Surrounding Mental Health in the Church." In this episode I give an overview of mental health, some reasons why there might be a stigma around the topic, and some ways that you can help fight the stigma. While the talk was geared toward Church leaders, I hope anyone will find the episode helpful. Listen at https://anchor.fm/bornagainanxious

999+

It’s the number of emails sitting unread in my inbox. Look… I never intended for it to get that way. But over time, if I don’t address it, it just builds up. The same thing happens with my downloads folder, or the junk mail sitting on my kitchen table… or my mind.

A few years ago, I read a startling statement. It went something like this “Teens today are exposed to the same amount of information and data in one day as their parents were in a month.” I’m guessing that if the numbers were updated for today, it would be even more startling.

We live in a culture of overload. A culture of excess information. A culture with a 24/7 news cycle. And it is having devastating impacts on our mental health.

Here’s the catch-22 of all this. It’s hard to break the cycle. It’s hard to take a step back. So we simply stay in this information overload loop. But avoiding short-term work has long-term impacts.

I started clearing out my inbox this morning. It’s not at zero. It is still sitting at 693. But that’s a whole lot less than 999+. And I’m committed to getting it to zero.

So where do you need to put in the work this week to clear space in your mind? Trust me, you need it for your mental health.

Wait.

I don’t like to wait. I don’t like to pause. I don’t like to slow down. As someone who lives with depression and anxiety, I find it much easier to distract myself. To not think about things, to not take the time to reflect. To not take time to breath.

But it’s in those moments of waiting, those moments of reflection, those moments of quiet that I find God.

Our culture is so distracting. News, social media, violence, division, constant noise, a million material things that compete for our attention. And every one of us buys into the lies.

So today, may you find peace. May you find rest. Turn off the TV, put down the phone, stop working yourself into distraction. Stop buying into the lie that you need to have it all right now. Just stop. Even if only for a moment, so that you might hear the still, small whisper of God.

May you find God in the waiting.
