Army leaders say: write. In an interwar period, a healthy professional conversation to improve our Army is an urgent priority, but "the Army’s professional publications need our help."

In a piece carried by Modern War Institute
the acting U.S. Army Chief of Staff, the Sergeant Major of the Army, and U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command's commander are "scouring the internet" for Army writers offering good ideas worthy of recognition and that might inform interwar reform.

"We cannot remain static, so we ask this of you: Write....Spread the word. And join us as we commit to renewing one of our Army’s greatest assets, our culture of professional military writing."

The Harding Project will regularly run profiles of distinguished military authors to remind the Army of its writing legacy and inspire a writing future. We were honored to call our first profile that of Ian Fishback, which ran the week he was laid to rest at Arlington.

While serving with the Army overseas as a young infantry officer, Fishback grew concerned with detainee mistreatment. After attempting for many months to clarify treatment standards through his chain of command, he wrote a whistleblowing letter to Senator John McCain.

The letter bears reading in its entirety (https://buff.ly/3KYiL43) and resulted in the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005. He later studied philosophy at the University of Michigan and taught philosophy at West Point. He would continue to write on the soldier's moral position.

As the army and those who knew him bid farewell to Ian Fishback, the Harding Project reflects on his example. He leaves behind a written record of courage that commands the attention of any soldier who aspires to take up the pen.

The U.S. Army has a rich history of writers in uniform. The Harding Project intends to tell it - with your help. If you have nominations let us know here. To follow its telling, subscribe at www.Harding project.com and on social media.

The first Harding Project Research Brief reviews the results of a 60+ military author survey concerning healthy and effective military professional journals.

A 6 point consensus emerged. Military publications ought aspire to:
1) Consistent quality content
2) A balance of informative and argumentative pieces
3) Senior leader engagement
4) Comprehensive audience reach
5) A diverse authorship
6) Institutional support

The Harding Project will be releasing more research briefs, feature pieces, and military author profiles via its flagship newsletter and on social media. Have thoughts on what angles, people or issues should be covered? Let us know here, or write it down.
