Hot on the heels of the world premiere of his upcoming “Don’t Worry Darling,” the Olivia Wilde-directed movie mired in controversy and less than generous reviews for his performance, Styles’ second film of 2022 is an adaptation of Bethan Roberts’ same-titled novel.

Instead, “My Policeman” finds smoother ground in the present-day scenes with a trio of older actors who can elevate a script.

Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi crafts engrossing, nagging moral tales without stooping to overt moralizing. Eric Rohmer did the same but set his subtle parables in the provinces of romance and gender. Even Farhadi’s 2011 marriage drama, “A Separation,” was more concerned with situational ethics than erotic entanglements. His new picture, “A Hero,” is set and shot in his home country—his previous film “Everybody Knows,” starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, was shot in Spain—where, among other things, debtor’s cage is still a thing.

Europe, the Americas, and the East, "A Hero" is a chilling demonstration of how, as the song says, money changes everything.

A lot of work went into creating the technical aspects of “Thirteen Lives,” from Molly Hughes’ skillful recreation of the interiors of Thailand’s Tham Luang Nang Non cave to its two lead actors getting SCUBA-certified so they could dive without much use of stunt doubles. The underwater cinematography by Sayombhu Mukdeeprom is impressive and the sound mix is often quite eerie in its depiction of water and cave noises. All this effort is for naught. Ron Howard’s recent directorial effort is a tedious, mediocre retelling of the June, 2018 incident where 12 Thai adolescents and their soccer coach were trapped in a flooded cave for 18 days. They were rescued by an international crew of cave divers led by Rick Stanton and John Volanthen.

Since Howard and company know how easily “Thirteen Lives” can sink into a White savior narrative, we occasionally spend time with Thai Navy.
