This year we are testing out some EZ Drops (like Y drops but different brand) Last year it didn’t rain hardly at all in June and the Nitrogen that we side dressed with coulters sat in the middle of the row until we got a rain. This set the corn back quite a bit so it got us thinking that there might be a better way. Enter, the EZ drop! These allow the liquid nitrogen to be placed at the base of the plant so it doesn’t have to travel as far to get to the roots. Also, a heavy dew or a light rain will funnel water down to the base of the plant to help work the N into the soil. Let’s see how they work!

We had some help but we are tentatively done planting corn! We still have 30 acres that we would like to plant to corn but it is still too wet. If it dries up soon, we will plant corn. If not, it will go to soybeans.

After our planter broke down, we had to call in some backup to get finished. Thankful for good friends who are always here for us when we need a hand!

It’s just too bad it had to be a red tractor 🤪

Seed tender didn’t want to start planting today so we had to use the old bean wagon. Not the most efficient thing but it’s better than a bucket! Day 1 was a success! Looks like rain tomorrow though…

It may not look like it to you, but this is WAY more organized than it was 2 weeks ago. I finally took the time to untangle all these lines and cables. All these plastic lines are for the air bags, air clutches, and two separate liquid fertilizer systems on our corn planter.

Planting progress report: 1.4% done!
Right or wrong, I planted 23.5 acres of beans today. This is the earliest we’ve ever planted beans and is more of an experiment than anything. I hope they grow😅

The most important piece of equipment on our farm is 26 years old! Yep this planter was built in 1998. But don’t let it fool you, it has a lot of upgrades.

-Air Force keeps the right down pressure on the row unit keeping it in the ground no matter what the field conditions are.

-Vset corn meters are the most accurate meter in the industry.

-Upgraded parallel arms and bushings keep the row units tight and provide better accuracy and singulation.

-360 Bandits place valuable nitrogen in a band on both sides of the seed.

-Tru Count row clutches shut rows off two at a time to prevent overlap and save seed.

-Flo Rite seed firmers place nutrients in the row with the seed to provide an early season boost.

-Copperhead Furrow Cruisers gently close the seed trench tucking the seed into the furrow in varying soil types.

We don’t have all the latest and greatest technology, but this planter has come a long way since it was new! My wish list for eventual upgrades includes Delta Force hydraulic down force and electric drives for our meters.
There are so many aftermarket options for planters these days that a farmer can take a decades old planter and bring it into the here and now. Technology is pretty incredible!

Spreading some Ammonium Sulfate for the 2024 corn crop. It’s nice to get this don’t in March so we can focus on planting in about a month!

The fertilizer spreader is in the shop getting some attention. It had a few bearings out and it needs a new front axle. This spreader has torsion axles and one side is bent. It doesn’t look like much, but the tire drags so much that it blew out going down the road last fall!

We decided to take the next step in our strip till journey and start banding our dry fertilizer. We bought this Gladiator on auction for a decent price. It needs a little work but I think we can get it back in shape. First step is to remove all the anhydrous components because we won’t be needing them!
