Tropical storm Franklin looks set to become the first hurricane to hit the Atlantic basin this year as satellite images show the storm force intensifying.

The storm formed over the western Caribbean Sunday and made landfall near Pulticub in southeast Mexico before battering the area with 60mph (95kmph) winds. The US National Hurricane Center forecasts that Franklin will make its second landfall in Mexico late Wednesday or early Thursday, as a hurricane. https://www.rt.com/viral/399117-storm-franklin-satellite-images/

In mid-July, one of the largest icebergs ever recorded broke free from the Larsen C shelf in Antarctica. New satellite pictures captured by Deimos Imaging show the floating ice fortress in stunning detail.

The gigantic iceberg, the third largest ever recorded, broke free from the southernmost continent sometime between July 10-12 and is now adrift off the coast.

Given the catchy name A68, the iceberg is some 5,800 square kilometers in size, making it twice the size of Luxembourg and almost four times larger than the Greater London area. https://www.rt.com/viral/398898-satellite-photos-larsen-c-iceberg/

Why we are experiencing strange weather.

Water from melting polar ice is denser than sea water and it is changing ocean circulation. Earth, Oceans and Space are one interconnected system, which is why the American Geophysical Association has as its newspaper EOS.

Deep ocean circulation and our atmosphere are connected, and the position of the jet stream, a high altitude ribbon of fast moving air, which affects the weather we experience, is being changed. When it is in an unusual, abnormal place, we get unusual weather.

The denser polar melt water, due to differences in salinity, has the capability of sinking the north Atlantic part of the global thermohaline conveyor, a deep water ocean current which gives us the Gulf Stream and makes north eastern America, Scandinavia, Europe and the UK inhabitable.

There is more at risk here than just us getting dangerous or freak weather.

The current El Niño weather phenomenon is taking its toll on coral reefs, prompting a field campaign to the middle of the Pacific Ocean to explore how Europe’s Sentinel-2 satellite might be able to quantify the damage on a large scale. The impact can include severe drought in Africa, increased rainfall in South America, fires across southeast Asia, severe winter storms in California, a heatwave in Canada and intense hurricanes raging along the Pacific Ocean. http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Copernicus/Sentinel-2/World_s_corals_under_threat
