✦ The new year has arrived, and with it an opportunity to reimagine how our lives can be. Map out your aspirations for the new year. Focus on how you would like your life to feel. Then, bring it to life through a vision board.

Grab your tools (eg. old magazines, printed pictures, markers, pinterest), get comfy, and set the tone with feel-good tunes. Whether it’s exploring new cuisines or getting to the next milestone of your passion project, this colorful collage will be a gentle reminder of your goals.

Remember that to fulfill them, however, requires tangible action. Lean into the embodiment of intentionality with your habits, relationships, and routines. It may feel daunting to begin the journeys you laid out – you may have even encountered some obstacles this month already – but you made it to 2024, don’t you see you are more determined than you give yourself credit for?

Though the air is still sticky and hot, the turn of the season is just around the corner 🍂

Whether you dread the end of those endless summer afternoons, or welcome the darker days… the unmistakable feeling of a coming shift is in the air.

Prepare your space. Sweep the floors, switch up your sheets, and clear out your closet.

Prepare your body. Take your vitamins, learn a new healthy recipe, and get back into a workout groove.

Prepare your mind. Where would you like to be at the end of the coming season? What would you like to accomplish? How would you like to grow, shift, evolve? And importantly, what new routines will support you in getting there?

Get clear and set yourself up for a cozy, nourishing, enriching season ahead — the vibes support it.

Current vibes: engrossing fantasy books, simmering soup, & long, cozy nights 🌃🌑🕯

Daylight savings has once again swept in to make it darker earlier in the day.

So often, we fear the long night. But darkness creates a void in which we can seed our deepest dreams & creative impulses.

Looking for some long weekend reading material? 📚✨

Braiding Sweetgrass: indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge and the teachings of plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer is well worth a read 📖

In a sentence: A deeply heartfelt collection of essays on developing respect for and an understanding of our reciprocal relationship with the natural world.

The details: Kimmerer reflects on her life as a mother, scientist, professor, & member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Kimmerer writes beautifully about thenatural world, scientific knowledge, & the role of Indigenous wisdom in restoring ecological balance.

What it’s like: a nature documentary meets moving memoir meets ecological call-to-action.

Take a peek: “To love a place is not enough. We must find ways to heal it.”

Daylight savings has once again swept in to make it darker earlier in the day.

🧠 ideas worth knowing: creativity as a river 🌊✨

In Women who Run with the Wolves, writer & psychologist Clarissa Pinkola Estés introduces the idea of creativity as a flowing river. She writes that as the river of creativity flows through us:

“We become its tributaries, its basins; we are pools, ponds, streams, and sanctuaries. The creative force flows into whatever beds we have for it as well as those we dig with our own hands. We don’t have to fill them, we only have to build them.”

In other words, you are inherently creative. Creativity is not something you have to go out and find. Rather, you have to create the space for it to flow. To connect with your creativity, all you must do is clear the water.

Overtime, your creative river can get clogged up with anxieties, projections & fears. Of not being good enough. It can become polluted. By rejecting the things that make you unique. By long to-do lists & never-ending work. By unhealthy habits.

How do you clear the river?

Create space. In your schedule & in your physical surroundings. Take time to be still & quiet. Stay with the process, even (especially) when you feel discouraged. Dedicate yourself to growth & regular practice. And, most importantly, remember that your river is always there, ready to flow.

Current vibes: knit blankets, flickering candles & cozy movie nights ✨🌑🕯️

Just like that, spooky season meets cozy season. The days are colder, the nights longer, & that pile of knit blankets looks increasingly inviting.

Take this as permission to light that candle you’ve been saving. Snuggle into your favorite sweater, & invite your nearest & dearest over for a stove-popped popcorn & cozy move night.

And remember: as the earth’s pace slows, we have the opportunity to turn inwards. To explore our dark depths & reconnect with our internal landscape. Rest isn’t only okay, it’s needed.

Use this time to slow down, listen deeply, tend to your inner landscapes, dream up a kinder world, & get cozy – the vibes support it. ✨

Leaving the door open 🚪✨

So often we avoid the unknown, & the potential for change, out of fear of what could go wrong, fear of ending up embarrassed or disappointed.

But when we avoid the bad, but also avoid the good.

How often have you found yourself thinking or saying:

“I’m not the kind of person who can [insert impossible thing here]”,

Or

“I could never do what she does”,

Or

“That’s just how I am”?

⚡️ Each time you say that to yourself, you’re closing the door to pleasure, possibility, & potential.

Read that again.

It’s so easy to run from humiliation by closing that door.

It’s so easy to not have to feel vulnerable, unsure, or embarrassed.

But each time you define yourself in those ways, you close the door to who you could be. What you could experience. What you could have.

You close the door to growth. Change. Success.

And there is no more certain way to be trapped in misery, boredom, & regret, than to close that door.

The next time you feel the urge to use one of those phrases, try these instead:

“I’m learning to be more [insert impossible thing here]”

“I’m going to figure out my version of how I can be more like her”

“I have a tendency to… & I’m going to practice doing this other thing instead.”

See the difference?

Imagine everything you say no to, each time you close the door.

Why miss out on all that pleasure, possibility, & potential—when you could just leave the door open? ✨

The origins of the zombie 🧠

You’ve heard the story of the undead 🧟‍♂️

Mindless reanimated co**ses commonly found in movies, games, & 5k races.

But have you ever wondered where the idea came from?

The modern-day “Zombie” term may have first made it into the English-speaking world in Brazil. In the 1800s, an English poet traveling in Brazil heard about a well-known Afro-Brazilian activist.
(The activist was named Zumbi, & Zumbi was fighting against the enslavement of Africans in Brazil.)

The term was also used in Haiti, to describe a co**se that has been reanimated using magic.

But the concept is much older. It’s thought to have originated in central Africa, in the Kingdom Kongo, & spread to West Africa.

The word itself comes from the Kongo words for “nzambi”, which loosely translates to “creator-god” or “divine spirit”. It also comes from “zumbi”, meaning “object” (or, more literally, “fetish”—not to be confused with the kinky kind).

In other words–a divine-object.

In West Africa & later Haiti, Zombie mythology usually involved questions of desire, power & powerlessness, &, of course, life & death.

Craving depth? 💫

Humans are social creatures–relationships that matter are water for the soul. 🪴

Without them, your roots will struggle to dig deeper, and you may not find nurture quite so easily.

The thing that can be easy to forget sometimes, is we are not simply jellyfish to be taken by the tide of what’s around us. 🌊

You don’t need to wait for the people you happen to go to class with, or happen to go to work with, to get more depth in your interactions.

If you crave more depth, you can be the depth. ⚡️

Oftentimes, those of us who care the most, or those who tend to be ambitious or big thinkers–can fail to see our role in things.

Exactly because you see so much around you, because you seek deeper depths, you can forget that you, too, can swim. And that when you do, usually others follow.

The point? Don’t wait for someone to show their true colors. Bring it out of them. Ask them about themselves. About their thoughts on a topic of interest to you. About things that matter–not just what they’re doing later.

Start in a class or in a shared office space. Or during a lunch hour. Sit with new people every other day. Get uncomfortable.

Especially if you’re afraid or nervous or uncomfortable doing so. Because, often, others will be shy as well. And then no one says anything. And then you end up here.

The truth is, people aren’t used to being honest. Not with themselves, not with others. They’re not used to thinking deeply about things. And those that are, like you, certainly aren’t used to sharing these thoughts out loud.

So if you’re craving it, you have to remember: you can always be the first. And you’ll have to, for this to work.

While your phone would have you believe the chaos never ends, remember there’s more to it. ⚡️

Our world is big enough that it can be on fire and full of water at the same time.

Look around and you’ll see examples of great suffering, followed by gentle reminders of peace and rebirth.

Reminders that for everything you can’t do, there’s at least one thing you can.

Here’s one: remember it’s ok to take a minute to breathe, play, & indulge.

There will still be things to worry about tomorrow. ✨🕯️
