Sudan 🇸🇩 was once home to the Kingdom of Kush, a rival to Egypt 🇪🇬 that embraced its neighbour's culture and beliefs. The city of Meroë became its capital, where over 30 kings were buried amid 200 pyramids. In comparison, there are only 118 pyramids in all of Egypt.

Ghana has regained its status as the top producer of gold in Africa, surpassing South Africa, according to recent data released by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

The chamber confirmed that Ghana’s gold output rose from 2.8 million ounces in 2021 to 3.7 million ounces in 2022, driven by growth in both the large and small-scale sectors.

See the young man in this picture? He was 18 years old when it was taken at the train station in Mobile, Alabama, in 1952. There is $1.50 in his pocket. In that bag by his foot are two changes of clothes. (And if his mama was anything like most other mamas in the South, probably some sandwiches and other snacks.) He was on his way to Indiana to take a job.

He was going to play baseball for the Indy Clowns of the Negro Leagues. Apparently, he was pretty good at it. A couple of years later, he was signed by the (then minor league) Milwaukee Brewers. He played for the Brewers for 2 seasons, then moved across town to the Braves, and later followed them to Atlanta. Eventually, he was the last Negro League player to be on a major league roster.

He still hangs around the baseball world. At the moment, he's the senior vice president of the Atlanta Braves. Even though the team has changed stadiums (twice) since then, his retired number, 44, still hangs on the outfield wall of the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium near where he belted a homer to break Babe Ruth's all-time record (which he held for 33 years).

His name is "Hammerin' Hank" Aaron. ⚾️ 🧢 👏🏿

A Glimpse into History: Vintage Portrait of a Jiye Woman in South Sudan.

The Jiye people, residing in southern Sudan, occupy a region slightly westward from the Toposa community. Within this territory, they contend with the Toposa tribe for both grazing lands and marital relationships. Though smaller in number compared to the Toposa, the Jiye people evoke fear due to their remarkable prowess in combat.

In adherence to their traditions, Jiye women attire themselves in leather garments and embellish their visages with intricate beadwork, predominantly featuring the color blue. Additionally, they wear earrings and exhibit scarifications on their bellies. Some women may also bear piercings above the upper lip and below the lower lip. Meanwhile, Jiye men showcase more extensive scarification patterns, signifying their social significance and status within the community.
