Turkey hunting is a game of chess, and it’s only right that sometimes the turkeys win.
Would have been nice to close the deal with some of the close calls we had with Toms first season, but can’t complain about quality time spent in the turkey woods! Looking forward to chasing them again next weekend.

Also where’s my fellow cribbage players who can appreciate how much that hand was worth? 🤑

Boat Upgrade!

Big shout out to my new friend Jamie for reaching out to me about selling his boat before listing it, and for meeting me halfway Saturday to do some fishing in it to test it out! I instantly fell in love with it. Safe to say it’s a slight upgrade from the “SS Minnow” 😅

Jamie had nicknamed this one the “Walleye Wagon”, so out of respect to him that name will stay and hopefully hold true to its name 🎣

To be honest these fish are so special to me that it was almost bittersweet keeping her for the taxidermist opposed to watching her swim away like I would normally release the giant females, but I won’t regret having the memory preserved to look at on the wall for the rest of my life 🥲

If anyone has taxidermist recommendations for backwater perch, send me a message! (And yes I should probably look into replicas more)…

Spring things #neature

This was a pretty cool evening on the river. Game fish were everywhere, but getting them to bite my what I was throwing was an obvious challenge when they had this buffet of minnows to eat instead! Eventually I just stopped trying to fish and sat back to appreciate the Mississippi River food chain. Full video of this outing on the youtube channel linked in bio. P.S. Here is a video of how to sustainably harvest wild ramps. I’m making this post because I see too many people harvest ramps in a non sustainable way. It apparently takes 7-10 years for a ramp to reach maturity, and if you dig up the entire bulb/roots it kills the entire plant. Harvesting them in this fashion keeps the roots in the ground and allows them to grow back every year. If we want to enjoy the resource, is our responsibility to respect the resource. #sustainableharvest #wildramps #forage #naturesbountry #forager

Note to self & anyone else who ventures around in the woods: If you hear a mysterious noise coming from a hole in a tree, don’t climb up to investigate. While turkey hunting yesterday my curiosity got the best of me. I couldn’t quite reach my head up to it (thankfully), so reached my phone up on video mode to see what it was. This was the result, and it scared me enough to make a noise I don’t think I’ve ever made before. 😅 #thatwasahorribleidea #raccoon

While motoring around on the Mississippi this past Saturday we had a peculiar encounter when we saw this groundhog swimming in the main channel of the river. Oddly enough it swam towards our boat as we approached it, obviously disoriented and exausted from treading water. My initial reaction wanted to scoop it up with the net, but that would have been a horrible idea with a young lab in the boat. It instead followed our boat as a current break, and we led it to shore. Long live the aquatic groundhog. #neature

Brook trout are beautiful things. Was sight fishing them earlier this winter when I decided to film a slow motion video with my phone while jigging a spoon.
