[From Bill Jacobs, the director of WHEN THE MOON WAS TWICE AS BIG:]
"Hey, gang! Kirkie here!!"
Those words fondly ring in my ears, echoing back from the days of my youth, listening to the radio in Kettering, Ohio. To me and so many others, Steve "Kirkie" Kirk was THE radio DJ – with his high energy delivery, laugh-out-loud stories, and beyond hilarious on-air crank phone calls. HE brought pop culture into our homes. HE got us up in the mornings. HE brought The Beatles to Cincinnati!
So, you can imagine my sheer joy, as a college filmmaker, striking up a friendship with the man and being invited to his home for one of his personally-made spaghetti dinners. Of course, the fact that we both then had and loved English Bulldogs didn't hurt much either.
Fast forward to the present: I'm completing our first big feature film – and Steve Kirk graciously says "yes" to reprising his days as a DJ, and records a specially-scripted radio show broadcast to be heard in the 1969 half of our film. Talk about being over the moon...
So, with a hurting but gratitude-filled heart, thank you, Kirkie, for all your many hours brightening our mornings on the radio, for your constant giving of time and energy for community charities, for your friendship, and for lending your voice to our movie – adding that extra flicker of nostalgia for all of us who long to once again hear...
.."Hey, gang! Kirkie here!!"
