INTERVIEW
Sara Roos

My name is Sara Roos and I'm an independent photographer, filmmaker and visual artist based in Utrecht, The Netherlands. I have finished my Bachelor of Fine Art studies at the University of the Arts Utrecht (HKU) in 2023.

I like to describe myself as a storyteller. My (audio)visual work mainly revolves around experiences that many people share, but which are not often talked about in our society. I tell those stories in a way that conveys the emotions I personally felt going through that experience, but leaves room for other people's own interpretation. It is important to me that the spectator can make their own connection with my work, in any way. It leads to interesting and sometimes much needed conversations. These conversations often lead to understanding for ourselves and one another.

Best Australian Director
Final Broadcast (Anthony Igra, Australia)

A foreign army is invading Australia.
Within hours the Australian Government is either dead or in disarray, with only a skeleton staff able to retreat to the dark hallways of a disused military hospital. Defeat is imminent. Surrender seemingly the only option. There, Megan Crandle, the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, oversees the preparation of his final broadcast to the nation.

The Prime Minister’s communications officer Paul Hegarty polishes the draft, attempting to explain the reasons for surrender. He is torn, thinking about his family that have stayed behind for him, while the ambitious Crandle browbeats him to stay on message, and to finish as soon as possible. In the half-darkness they argue syntax while bombs fall around them.

Into this powder keg enters a mysterious stranger Mr Norman Stand. In his late 60s, bound to a wheelchair, and apparently from the Department of Veterans Affairs, he is intent on changing the course of history.

The three soon find themselves in separate corners; to surrender, or to fight, or to appease to save life.

Death and mayhem follow. With seconds to spare, the Prime Minister is left facing the cameras, as well as facing an impossible choice.

As the name suggests, the London Director Awards is a film festival dedicated primarily to film directors. Every year we have a wide range of films from first-time directors. Our aim is to present and promote the best emerging, independent film directors, students and graduates of film schools. Among our top priorities is to encourage young aspiring filmmakers to follow their dreams.

We later saw some of our previous winners at festivals in Cannes, Berlinale, Sundance and Venice. By winning at the festival, we managed to encourage some filmmakers to start filming their first feature films. With our encouragement from the win, we motivated them to start a their feature film and this is a big reason why your film should not be missed at our festival.

SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW
Francisco Del Ryo
DIrector of Outside Francisque

Born in June 1997, Francisco Del Ryo has always been a creative type, developing embryonic short stories, video games and films as a child to impress his family and friends. During his years at university, he developed an offbeat cinematic universe based on the character of Francisque Dudestin, his eccentric alter ego. In 2023, after several years' work, the first chapter of this story took the form of an independent film entitled Outside Francisque.
