A new bill in Congress, introduced by both Republican and Democratic Representatives, aims to make Election Day a federal holiday for all Americans.

Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan was elected chair of the Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association on Tuesday, making history as the first Native American woman to lead a national political party committee.
Flanagan, who is the nation’s highest-ranking Native woman in elected office, said people shouldn’t ignore the role that Democratic lieutenant governors can play in enacting policies or winning elections. Generally their job is to support the governor and be there to fill in if the governor resigns or dies. But part of the job is what you make of it, she said, and the power of today’s crop of Democratic lieutenant governors derives from how many come from the social justice movement and have deep connections to these communities. Now they are in positions to deliver on the issues they’ve been organizing around for years.
“That is the secret sauce. That is what makes lieutenant governors so powerful,” Flanagan said in an interview. “We’ll make a difference in 2024.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom named Emily’s List President Laphonza Butler as Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s successor.
“She will make history—becoming the first Black le***an to openly serve in the U.S. Senate,” Newsom said in announcing Butler’s appointment Sunday evening.
Butler, 44, was a former leader of the state’s largest labor union—SEIU Local 2015. She served as an adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris in 2020, and in 2021, she became the first Black woman to lead , a fund-raising powerhouse dedicated to electing female candidates who support abortion rights.
Butler will serve through the remainder of Feinstein’s term ending in January 2025.

The bullying & & name-calling compounded my insecurities but the support of my family, , alopecia community, girlfriends in private life & my sister squad straightened my 👑 when I needed it most . Via ’ Lawrence Hurley: “The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down affirmative action programs at the University of North Carolina and Harvard in a major victory for conservative activists that ends the systematic consideration of race in the admissions process.
The court ruled that both programs violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution and are therefore unlawful. The vote was 6-3 in the UNC case and 6-2 in the Harvard case, in which liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was recused.
Roberts wrote that both programs "lack sufficiently focused and measurable objectives warranting the use of race, unavoidably employ race in a negative manner, involve racial stereotyping, and lack meaningful end points."
Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the court, wrote in a dissenting opinion that the ruling was "truly a tragedy for us all."
Justice Sonia Sotomayor, another liberal and the first Hispanic justice, wrote that the court "stands in the way and rolls back decades of precedent and momentous progress."

In 2016, millennials and Gen Z accounted for less than 1/3 of eligible voters. However, by 2024, that number is predicted to increase, giving young voters the opportunity to have a major impact on the country's future.
Adoption is complicated and each adoptee has their own relationship with it. I love my parents and they did their best to raise me in the ways they knew how. As a disabled person, it is hard to say what my fate would have been if I had grown up in South Korea and I recognize that complicated reality. But I completely support indigenous sovereignty and the right to raise for them to decide that they want to raise their own children, particularly due to the history of genocide done to their people. So happy to see the Brackeen v Haaland ruling go in favor of indigenous people.

Hadiya Pendleton was 15 when she was killed by a bullet on a playground in January 2013; a student at King College Prep in Chicago, she had just marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade a week earlier. In response, her friends and fellow students started Project Orange Tree to work against gun violence (“orange because hunters wear that color to warn others not to shoot them, and the tree to stand for the tree of life,” explained her friend at the time). That project bloomed into a national movement, supported by and many other organizers—three days of action and protests to end the gun violence that now kills *more* children each year than it did in 2013.

“I’m gutted,” wrote poet Amanda Gorman, whose poem “The Hill We Climb,” which she performed at President Biden’s Inauguration, was just banned at the Miami-Dade County school library. The school district’s decision to remove Gorman’s poem and several other works came after a parent complained that the works referenced critical race theory, gender ideology, and “indirect hate messages,” according to the .
“And let’s be clear: most of the forbidden works are by authors who have struggled for generations to get on bookshelves," wrote Gorman last night. "The majority of these censored works are by q***r and non-white voices.”

#Repost @the.root with • •Within a barrage of decisions handed down today, the Supreme Court has limited the ability to enforce Miranda rights. As CNN reports, police are now not liable for lawsuits if they fail to let suspects know they have a right to remain silent. Ironically, the 56th anniversary of the Miranda v. Arizona ruling establishing suspects must be informed of their constitutional right to an attorney and against self-incrimination just passed. With a 6-3 majority ruling, this ultimately shields police from potential damages in a civil lawsuit if they do not inform a suspect of their protected rights. In the case of Vega v. Tekoh, a woman claimed that hospital worker Terrence Tekoh attacked her after having a stroke after being assaulted near a Los Angeles hospital. Deputy Carlos Vega of the Los Angeles County obtained a statement from Tekoh as a confession. Vega did not read Tekoh his Miranda rights, and a jury acquitted Tekoh of criminal charges even with the information. Tekoh then sued Vegas, which a federal appeals court grained.
