Happy Birthday Hon. Marcus Garvey....

Today, we honour the memory and pay tribute to the life and work of our first national hero, the Rt. Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey, on the 133rd anniversary of his birth.

Marcus Garvey preached a message of prosperity, recognizing that social and economic advancement were key to improving the conditions of black people.
He was of the view that upward mobility would only come through our own efforts; taking charge of our destiny and effectively organizing ourselves and the resources at our disposal for increased prosperity.

The Philosophies & Opinions of Marcus Garvey, and indeed other scholarly work highlighting his teachings and advocacy, aptly portray Garvey as an unrepentant believer in enterprise and economic self-reliance. Not dissimilar to our own belief as members and supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party, that creativity and enterprise are key to creating wealth and securing a better life. Garvey saw entrepreneurship and the attainment of economic independence as the only way an oppressed people would stand a chance at breaking the stranglehold of bigotry and systemic oppression; ultimately taking charge of their future.

The best tribute we could ever pay to this revered hero and nationalist whose influence spanned the globe, is to become strident advocates for economic advancement. Like Marcus Garvey, this Government believes in empowering our people, securing our economic independence and lifting many Jamaicans out of poverty.
