Orangutans are classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Habitat loss, poaching, and the illegal pet trade have all contributed to orangutans' declining numbers.
As their natural habitats in the Southeast Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra are destroyed, orangutans are left with fewer places to live and find food. Deforestation, largely driven by palm oil plantations, logging, and human encroachment, are key factors.
There are success stories, however. Sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers in Borneo and Sumatra are dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and displaced orangutans. These centers play a crucial role in caring for orangutans and reintroducing them into the wild when possible.
Other conservation efforts involve reaching out to communities where orangutans live. It is hoped that educating local communities in conservation initiatives will foster long-term protection for these vibrant and intelligent primates.

Did you know bonobos like the one pictured here (and chimpanzees) share nearly 99 percent of our DNA? These expressive apes are native to the forests south of the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Although bonobos resemble chimpanzees, they are typically smaller, thinner, and darker. They live in groups led by females and are known for their social and protective nature within their groups. However, if two bonobo groups cross paths, fighting may ensue.

Civil unrest in the DRC, along with poaching, deforestation, and a low reproductive rate, all impact bonobo populations. An accurate count of this primate is not available, according to the WWF.

Komodo dragons are fascinating creatures with some truly unique characteristics. Here are three amazing facts about them:

1. Venomous Bite
Venomous Glands: Unlike many other reptiles, Komodo dragons have venomous glands that secrete toxic proteins. Venom delivered through a bite inhibits blood clotting, lowers blood pressure, and induces shock, making it easier for the Komodo dragon to subdue and consume its prey.
Bacteria Myth: It was long believed that the bacteria in their saliva caused their bite to be deadly, but recent research has shown that the venom plays a more significant role.

2. Incredible Size and Strength
Largest Lizard: Komodo dragons are the largest living lizards on Earth. They can grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) in length and weigh over 150 pounds (70 kilograms).
Powerful Hunters: Despite their size, they are powerful and agile hunters. They can take down prey much larger than themselves, including deer and water buffalo. They use their strong muscles, sharp claws, and powerful tail to overpower their prey.

3. Unique Reproduction
Parthenogenesis: Komodo dragons have a unique reproductive ability called parthenogenesis, which allows females to produce offspring without mating. This ability is particularly useful in isolated environments, like islands, where finding a mate can be challenging.

S*x Determination: The s*x of the offspring is determined by the chromosomal combination. Eggs fertilized with male chromosomes will develop into males, while those with female chromosomes will develop into females.

JJ the Mandrill...The Lost Files 😆🐵
I was scrolling through photos from this week, when I accidentally dragged the scoll bar and it landed on these images that I've never posted before. They're from a few months back. The brown background here is a water reflection. I believe the lighting was very late afternoon.
Just for fun, I'm including a screen shot of some of the images from this series that were taken in burst mode (multiple photos at once).
The artistry of nature never stops amazing me.
I will be out there early Saturday morning.....before it hits 100 degrees.

Strangely beautiful....and powerful

Striped hyenas have a distinctive appearance characterized by long, shaggy fur, and prominent black stripes running vertically along their bodies. Their front legs are longer than their hind legs, giving them a sloped back appearance.

They also have a long, thick mane of hair that runs along their back and can stand on edge if the hyena is fending off a predator or a rival, as a way to make him look more fearsome.

Striped hyenas have exceptionally powerful forelimbs and strong claws. They use their strong forelimbs to dig up carrion, break into burrows, or dig for tubers and roots. Their very strong bite force allows them to crush bones and consume almost all parts of a carcass. This ability is similar to other hyena species, such as the spotted hyena.

Striped hyenas are native to Africa, the Middle East, and India.

The Cinereous Vulture is Europe's largest vulture and one of the world's heaviest. This striking bird has dark brown, broad wings and a slightly wedge-shaped tail. Its bluish-grey head and neck are bald, complemented by a fluffy collar that lightens with age. Known as the 'monk vulture' in some regions, this name references its neck feathers, which resemble a monk’s hood.

Southern Africa Cape Griffon Vulture

These majestic birds have a winspan of up to 8.5 ft. Their conservation status is considered "vulnerable" due to hunting, habitat loss and poisoning -whether intentional or secondary- such as being poisoned by pesticides.
An important part of the ecosystem, vultures will scavange and clean the carcasses left behind by lions and other predators, helping to reduce the spread of toxins and disease.

In their own way, vultures really are quite beautiful. In this photo, I can see myself reflected in the vulture's left eye. 😯

Fast Facts:
Cheetahs are well-known for being the fastest land animals, reaching speeds of 60-70 mph—as fast as a car zipping down a freeway. Their semi-retractable claws provide extra grip during sprints. Another functional aspect of these stunning big cats is the black 'tear marks' under their eyes that help reduce sun glare. Sadly, with only about 7,000 left in the wild, cheetahs are classified as vulnerable. In addition to poaching for their fur, cheetahs face threats from habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. Ongoing conservation efforts are critical to ensure their survival.

As the leader, protector, and mentor, silverback Elmo plays a vital role in maintaining the harmony and well-being of his troop. Just as gorillas do in the wild, Elmo's strength and wisdom guide his family through daily life to ensure their safety and stability. Elmo and his troop are western lowland gorillas, a species that is critically endangered.
He's absolutely striking, even moreso in this somewhat surreal morning light last week.

Say hello to sweet baby mandrill Ruby. 🐵
Mandrills are the largest species of monkeys and are known for their strikingly colorful faces and rumps. Females are far less colorful and are only about one-third the size of males
Mandrills are also highly social animals and live in large groups known as troops or hordes. A troop can range from 20 to more than 100 individuals, in some cases. 🐵❤
The status of mandrills in the wild is "vulnerable," due to hunting and the loss of their natural habitats. A vulnerable status means a species is likely to become endangered in the near future.

Gibbons are considered one of the most threatened primates on Earth. Depending on the species, they range from vulnerable to critically endangered. Pictured here is a white-cheek gibbon, a species that is critically endangered. These expressive and beautiful apes face habitat loss due to the logging industry as well as poaching and the illegal pet trade.
