Guyanese-American actress Rhona Fox was last week honoured with the Rising Sun Award at the Caribbean Heritage ‘Salute to Hollywood & the Arts’ gala in Hollywood, California.

According to a press release, she was honoured with actor Reno Wilson, who currently stars on “Mike & Molly” on CBS and is of Antiguan heritage and Paula Madison, a former vice-president of NBC Universal and part owner of WNBA Los Angeles Sparks team, who is of Jamaican heritage.

Meanwhile, the release said that the Caribbean Heritage Organisation has been hosting the awards since 2007 and selected Rhona as this year’s emerging actor. The Rising Sun is awarded to one actor of Caribbean heritage each year. In her acceptance speech, Rhona was quoted as saying that she was humbled to receive the prestigious honour and shared it with everyone attending. “I’m so thrilled to receive the Rising Sun Award from the Caribbean Heritage Organisztion and had an amazing time celebrating this incredible recognition in true Hollywood fashion,” the release quoted Rhona as saying. “All this support encourages me to keep chasing this crazy dream of mine and I look forward to making my Caribbean people proud.”

The red carpet event, which also served as a fundraiser for local charities and a scholarship in Haiti, took place at the Hilton Universal City.

The awards were presented to the three honorees, with video tributes introducing each person.

Marva Herman, Executive Director of the Caribbean Heritage Organization and its founder Dr. Claire Nelson, who presented the award to Rhona, both saluted her.

Rhona Fox was born in Essequibo and relocated with her family to Nassau, Bahamas when she was 10. She later migrated to New York to attend university. The release said that in 2012, she was “awarded Guyana’s Golden Arrowhead Award” along with “the City of New York Proclamation, for her contributions to the arts”.

Guyanese in Film:
The CCH stands for Carol Christine Hilaria, her birth name. Most of her characters are enriched with positive attributes and it is a testament to this actress' abilities that she continues on such a high plane in a four-decade career.

Born on Christmas Day 1952 in Guyana, she was raised on a sugar cane plantation. Her parents, Betsy Enid Arnella (James) and Ronald Urlington Pounder, moved to the States while she was still a young girl, but she and her sister were sent to a convent boarding school in Britain where they were introduced to art and the classics. Following high school graduation, she arrived in New York and studied at Ithaca College, where her acting talents were discovered. Regional and classical repertory theater followed, earning roles in such productions as "The Mighty Gents" with Morgan Freeman at the New York Shakespeare Festival and "Open Admissions," her Broadway debut. Her preference for a warmer climate led to her move to Hollywood in the late 1970s.

After bit roles in All That Jazz (1979) and I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can (1982), she found cult status in the art-house film Bagdad Cafe (1987) ("Bagdad Café" in the US) as the offbeat owner of a roadside café, but Pounder's prominence came with television. Usually cast as a confident, strong-minded professional, she is known for her understated intensity and earned an Emmy nomination for her stint on the hospital drama ER (1994). She has performed in a number of highly acclaimed topical dramas, including American Playhouse: Go Tell It on the Mountain (1985), Common Ground (1990), Murder in Mississippi (1990), Funny Valentines (1999) and Boycott (2001), for which a number of kudos have come her way.

Some Inspiration from Guyana's own

19/10/2019

Hello folks,

The Department of Language and Cultural Studies at the University of Guyana has been hosting a West Indian Literature Conference this week and there was a very late addition to the programme: a free event at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre. Yao Ramesar, an award-winning Trinidadian filmmaker, will be screening one of his films at 1830hrs this evening, “Haiti Bride”.

If you have even a cursory interest in film, you’re invited to come along. The event is open to the public and you’ll have a chance to chat with Yao and some other academics if you wish.

Your presence would be most welcome, and please share among your own contacts.

Many thanks,
Andrew.

Film Festival Tip #3:
Keep the opening credits short

Be mindful of opening credits… very lengthy credit sequences are generally hated by programmers and jurors as they take away from the story telling, for the most part, and delay a short films narrative. In a 10 minute film we do not need a 2-3 minute credit sequence! Be concise and precise in telling the story.

Daniel Sol, Festival Director, HollyShorts

Tip 2: Have Awesome film stills

The images don’t have to be slick or printed on glossy paper, but they should be of high resolution and offer an accurate representation of the film. Good quality images are really useful for the subsequent marketing and publicity campaigns – a good image will be used everywhere!

-Jenny Neighbour, Program Manager, and Documentary Programmer, Sydney Film Festival

Film Festival Tip #1: Submit Your Film Early!

You’re free to submit your film throughout the submission period, but the truth is the later you wait the harder it may be to land a spot. Festival programmers may (and likely) begin viewing and choosing films before the end of the submission period. As time goes on the programming slots will fill, possibly making it more competitive for late applicants. If you’re confident enough in your work to be submitting to the fest, then you need to submit early – when the judges/programmers are fresh and less stressed.
