Another poem I wrote:

Dreams

We all, as children, dream beautiful dreams
Of what we hope to be.
But life throws curves at most, it seems.
And that’s what happened to me.

I dreamt of flying high in space,
Where I could touch the stars.
But that dream died without a trace.
I’d never visit Mars.

Instead, I found myself, one day,
Toiling at a trade.
No hope, no dreams, just walls of gray,
I watched my future fade.

And then I read a book, you see,
That lit a spark inside.
Revealing something I could be,
I’d travel far and wide.

The words were crafted with such skill,
They opened a new door.
Could I lay hold of ink and quill,
And write of peace and war?

To share a story of the past
Or even what’s to come.
A universe so grand and vast,
Amid life’s ceaseless thrum?

The subject of the story read
Is not what thrilled my soul.
It was, my friend, how words were said
That now made my dream whole.

I looked and read and realized I
Could do the same as he,
Combine so many words and try
To write for all to see.

And then I saw this was my gift,
Fulfillment of my dream.
I’ll travel throughout space so swift,
An everlasting stream.

The moon and Mars and Saturn, too,
My destination all.
Every day it’s somewhere new,
Beyond the gloomy pall.

With pen and paper, I will write
A story for the ages.
Pursue this craft both day and night
To write a million pages.

And now I find it’s my escape
To flee the world around.
I create a world, its shape
Is mine from sky to ground.

Anything can become real
As words come out so fast.
Watch my hands as I bend steel,
Mix future with the past.

I may not be the best around,
In fact, I’m sure I’m not.
But when I see my dreams abound,
There is no afterthought.

If you find a curve is thrown
At you in life’s pursuit,
And that dream you’ve always known
Somehow becomes just moot.

Don’t you fear, please don’t give up
Because there’s more for you.
Drink at last from this life’s cup
Enjoy its heady brew.

Your dream might not be what you thought,
But something new, my friend.
With fear you might think it fraught,
Yet, your dream’s already penned.

Embrace it every day and see
What your dream has in store.
You will find it sets you free
And to the stars you’ll soar.

It’s thoroughly disheartening to see how many young people today actually want the United States to have a communist government. I think it is, in part, because they’re too young to have witnessed the atrocities of communist governments, and the education system over the past 20 or 30 years has failed in making that a critical part of their schooling.

I graduated from high school in the early 1970s so I’m old enough to remember talking with my grandparents about living through the Great Depression and the scarcity/rationing of World War Two. Very few kids today have had that sort of opportunity.

The younger generations didn’t see the Berlin Wall go up, trapping tens of thousands of people behind the Iron Curtain. They didn’t see all the people gunned down by the communist government of East Germany as they tried to climb the wall, people who just wanted to be free. And they weren’t here to cheer as the people rose up and tore the wall down, finally freeing the captive population after decades of communist tyranny.

They didn’t see the millions of Ukrainians who starved to death in the Holodomor . . . the man-made famine that Stalin used to beat the people into submission in the 1930s.

They didn’t see Mao Zedong implement his “Great Leap Forward” as intellectuals were imprisoned or executed because they didn’t support communism. In 2001, I worked with a Chinese couple that was persecuted by the communist government. The wife spent several years in a labor camp because she was a Christian.

They didn’t see the millions in Eastern Europe who lost their freedom as the Soviet tanks rolled across their countries in the weeks following World War Two. These folks, along with the millions in Russia itself, were forced to live in poverty and squalor while the Party apparatchiks had food, clothing, cars, and more.

They didn’t see the hordes of political prisoners herded onto cargo trains and transported to the farthest regions of Siberia to serve their sentences in horrific gulags.

They’ve never read – or even heard of – Alekzandr Solzhenitsyn, one of the greatest authors of all time (a Nobel Prize winner), who experienced and wrote about the horrors of the gulags.

They didn’t see Pol Pot’s “killing fields” in Cambodia where more than 1,300,000 people were killed and buried from 1975-1979 as the government committed ethnic cleansing.

They didn’t see Fidel Castro’s communist regime strike a deal to set up offensive missiles carrying nuclear bombs 90 miles from the Florida shore.

They didn’t see that, in the 20th century alone, communist governments around the world killed over one hundred million men, women, and children (estimates go as high as 150,000,000), the vast majority being their own citizens. The killing and persecution continues as communist China imprisons the minority Uyghur people, a group who labors under horrible conditions to build consumer goods sold in the United States. Some reports also claim Xi’s government harvest organs from Uyghurs.

These younger generations are well-versed in the horrors of fascism but fail to recognize that communist governments killed ten times as many people as fascist governments did. Communism – then, now, and in the future – poses a bigger threat to the lives of people around the world than does fascism.

Part of the problem is that people like Bernie Sanders extol the virtues of communism (or, as he calls it, “democratic socialism,” a phrase beloved by communist countries). Sanders is a dyed in the wool communist who actually honeymooned in the Soviet Union in 1988. And a younger cadre of elected officials like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez promote communist policies.

It’s sad, but understandable, that young Americans know more about Taylor Swift than Ronald Reagan, Megan Thee Stallion than Helen Keller, and Eliot Page than Louis Armstrong.

We’re in a tough situation today. We need to find a way to educate young Americans about the reality of history before we lose them forever to a fictional alternate universe.

The World War Two generation was *a* great generation -- certainly far superior to those that followed -- but the Founding Generation was the greatest!
