5 lessons from book "The Alchemist

1. Follow your dreams: The book emphasizes the importance of pursuing your dreams and not letting fear or doubt hold you back. Santiago's journey to find a treasure is a metaphor for the pursuit of one's personal legend, or the purpose that one is meant to fulfill in life.

2. The universe conspires to help you: The book suggests that when you pursue your dreams, the universe will conspire to help you achieve them. This can take the form of unexpected opportunities, chance encounters, or coincidences that guide you along the way.

3. Embrace the journey: The book reminds us that the journey itself is as important as the destination. Santiago learns many valuable lessons and meets many interesting people on his journey to find the treasure, and these experiences shape him into the person he is meant to become.

4. Listen to your heart: The book encourages us to listen to our intuition and follow our hearts, rather than letting the opinions of others or external circumstances dictate our choices. Santiago's ability to listen to his heart helps him navigate the challenges he faces on his journey.

5. Everything is connected: The book suggests that everything in the universe is interconnected, and that we are all part of a larger, mysterious plan. Santiago's journey teaches him to see the world in a new way, and to recognize the beauty and complexity of the universe.

Language of fungi derived from their electrical spiking activity

Mushrooms communicate with each other using up to 50 ‘words’, scientist claims

Clickable link to the article at PaulStamets.com

FTA: Fungi exhibit oscillations of extracellular electrical potential recorded via differential electrodes inserted into a substrate colonized by mycelium or directly into sporocarps. We analysed electrical activity of ghost fungi (Omphalotus nidiformis), Enoki fungi (Flammulina velutipes), split gill fungi (Schizophyllum commune) and caterpillar fungi (Cordyceps militaris). The spiking characteristics are species specific: a spike duration varies from 1 to 21 h and an amplitude from 0.03 to 2.1 mV. We found that spikes are often clustered into trains. Assuming that spikes of electrical activity are used by fungi to communicate and process information in mycelium networks, we group spikes into words and provide a linguistic and information complexity analysis of the fungal spiking activity. We demonstrate that distributions of fungal word lengths match that of human languages. We also construct algorithmic and Liz-Zempel complexity hierarchies of fungal sentences and show that species S. commune generate the most complex sentences.

The monarch was banned from playing monopoly, because they faught with eachother.

Monopoly wasn't invented by the Parker Brothers, nor the man they credited. In 1904, Monopoly was originally called The Landlord's Game, and was invented by a radical woman. Elizabeth Magie's original game had not one, but two sets of rules to choose from.

One was called "Prosperity", where every player won money anytime another gained a property. And the game was won by everyone playing only when the person with the least doubled their resources. A game of collaboration and social good.

The second set of rules was called "Monopoly", where players succeeded by taking properties and rent from those with less luck rolling the dice. The winner was the person who used their power to eliminate everyone else.

Magie's mission was to teach us how different we feel when playing Prosperity vs Monopoly, hoping that it would one day change national policies.

When the Parker Bros adopted the game, they erased Magie, they erased the "Prosperity" rules and celebrated "Monopoly". What they couldn't erase was Magie's lesson.

THE VAGUS NERVE

A seemingly never-ending branching nerve that connects most of our major organs to our brain 🧠.

It’s the longest cranial nerve in our body, one for the right side and one for the left. And is largely responsible for the connection for its role as a mediator between thinking and feeling, you know our “gut feeling.”

The vagus nerve is the “queen” of the parasympathetic nervous system. The “rest and digest” or the nerve. So the more we do things to activate the nerve (like deep ), the most we combat the effects of its opposer, the sympathetic nervous system - the “fight or flight”, rushing around, have to do something, releasing one.

A few other functions of the vagus nerve, just to name a few:
▪️slows your heart rate and respiration.
▪️lowers blood pressure.
▪️helps with calmness and relaxation.
▪️controls involuntary muscles in the digestive system, therefore, aiding digestion.
▪️taste sensation.
▪️movement function for the muscles in the neck responsible for swallowing and speech.
▪️gut-brain communication.
▪️reduces inflammation.

LET THE CHILDREN PLAY with pinwheels that rotate with clean air and not with black and dirty smoke from coal. Imielin is a community in Poland who knows the ill effects of burning coal. Higher incidence of respiratory problems (especially to children) have prompted them to question the continuous use of this dirty fossil fuel.
