“This is a medium that’s still very male-oriented, and I’m not only talking about the artists but also the institutions, the curators, the spaces where Joropo moves commercially here. Joropo has given me the possibility of showing another vision and another way of making music in the region.”

In this fascinating interview, speaks to singer and band leader of , Colombia’s game-changing joropo band doing things their own way and celebrating the genre’s Afro and Indigenous roots.

Carpentier scribbled the plot of a new historical fiction, later to become Explosion in a Cathedral, on a restaurant menu before leaving the island of Guadeloupe in the 1950s.

The novel has long been considered the Cuban writer’s most impressive work.

A new translation of this political critique, published by Penguin Classics, could not come at a better time. The themes of corruption, power abuse, and discrimination seem just as relevant now as they did for the culprits of revolutions two hundred years ago.

The kicks off today with a fantastic line-up of Latin American films this year.
First up is the classic 'Macario' (1960), the first Mexican film to be nominated for an Academy Award. Sharp observations of inequality, avarice and morality in this unsentimental vision of peasant life and a Faustian pact set against the backdrop of celebrations.

“I worried that daily life perhaps wasn’t enough [to make a film out of], but it is. That’s what I learned.” Director Tatiana Huezo’s words about her stunning, poetic new doc, El eco.

El Eco in Chignahuapan, Puebla, is a magical place at 3,000 metres above sea level where life is dictated by the seasons: harvests, sun, storms and breeding cycles. El Eco has tall creaking pines, lakes like mirrors, sun that leathers the skin and mist that covers everything from sight. In Huezo’s film we view El Eco through the eyes of its younger generations: children and adolescents learning what it means to grow up and discover the adult world, who will soon be responsible for looking after the land, the animals, the crops and each other.

A special new track from asks for nothing in return. “Canción de Autosuperación No.1” (Self-improvement –or maybe Getting Over Yourself– No.1) is a refreshing, honest and laid-back personal mantra about not crushing under the pressure of social media and the obligation to produce, instead plucking a classical guitar and giving yourself over to the grace of falling asleep in a hammock.

In UK cinemas this week, two films from Chilean women directors.

Francisca Alegría's THE COW WHO SANG A SONG INTO THE FUTURE and Manuela Martelli's 1976.

Premiering at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight last year: Chilean drama 1976 from New Wave Films is the feature directing debut of actress Manuela Martelli, and set during the years of the Augustus Pinochet regime. Aline Küppenheim stars as a woman who is asked by a priest to shelter a young man who is a dissident. The UK premiere at BFI London Film Festival saw 1976 win the Sutherland Award for best first feature.

Francisca Alegría's THE COW WHO SANG A SONG INTO THE FUTURE from Sovereign Film Distribution blends elements of magical realism, sci fi and fantasy to delve into deep family wounds and deliver a potent environmental message. The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize - World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the last Sundance Film Festival and Alegría has since been named as a Sundance Institute Fellow for 2023.

Our Story

Sounds and Colours came to life in 2010. There were too many dead-ends when it came to finding out about Latin American culture, too many stories that had not been told. We decided to start telling those stories. Along the way, we met communities of migrants in cities like London, New York, Berlin and Los Angeles, and our team grew. We now have collaborators across Europe, North America and South America, all offering their own take on what makes Latin America great.

Our aim has always been to look between the cracks, to find the creative happenings, innovations and, most importantly of all, the people, artists and movements who are so passionate about documenting their culture or their art that there is nothing else they could possibly be doing. This is the Latin America we want to shine a light on.

We are not about hype. We are not about lifestyle. We’re searching for the soul of Latin America.
