Two feared dead as police and Shi’ites clash in Kaduna

Shiites in Kaduna
At least two people have been feared dead as the Nigerian police and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria otherwise known as “Shi’ites” clashed during a protest against the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine in Kaduna.

Members of the movement in their hundreds on Thursday took to Kaduna streets to condemn Israeli attacks on Palestinians.

Trouble started when stones and pebbles flew freely in different directions as the Islamic sect marched through the Muhammadu Buhari Way, formerly WAFF Road in the heart of the city while motorists and other road users scampered for safety.

The development, an eyewitness said, forced police operatives to disperse the protestors with live bullets which allegedly resulted in the death of two persons.

However, the Kaduna Police Command confirmed to The PUNCH on the telephone that only one person was killed during the clash with the Shi’ite members.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, blamed the death on IMN members, whom he described as a violent sect.

Hassan said, “The movement came out today, Thursday 16, November 2023, knowing fully well the ban on public procession in the state. They intend to disrupt social, and economic activities in the state. They blocked the major roads in the metropolis, preventing innocent and law-abiding citizens from carrying out their daily businesses.

“Our operatives(police) in the process of dispersing them, were pelted with stones and other dangerous objects such as catapults and in the process, one innocent civilian by name Aliyu Sani(40 years old) was hit and died.

“The public knows the Shi’ites are violent people who can never protest peacefully and everybody knows that they have been outlawed in the state.”

Wasteful Nigeria play disappointing 1-1 draw with Lesotho in World Cup qualifier

2026 World Cup qualifier Super Eagles draw against Rohr’s Benin Republic, South Africa
Nigeria’s Super Eagles were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Lesotho in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Thursday.

The Super Eagles were the dominant team throughout the match, but they were wasteful in front of goal and failed to convert their chances.

Taiwo Awoniyi of Nottingham Forest missed a golden opportunity for Nigeria, failing to capitalize on a clear chance in front of the net.

Lesotho’s Crocodiles, despite being the underdogs, held their own against the Super Eagles, frustrating the home team with a resolute defensive performance.

Lesotho ranks 153rd in the world. That’s 113 points less than Nigeria – took the lead in the 56th minute against the run of play in the Group C qualifiers at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

But, 11 minutes later, defender Semi Ajayi rose to the occasion, powering a header past the Crocodiles’ post to restore parity for the hosts.

The Super Eagles had the majority of the possession in the Group C game, but a combination of wasteful finishing and defensive heroics from the South Africans made the job difficult for Nigeria.

Coach Jose Peseiro’s men pressed their opponents and had a chance to take the lead in the 36th minute. However, Nottingham Forests’ Taiwo Awoniyi squandered a brilliant cutback from Victor Boniface, kicking the ball inches wide of the goal.

Ademola Lookman’s shot from Atalanta was tipped over the bar by the Lesotho goalkeeper eight minutes later, while Boniface’s downward header on the stroke of halftime posed no problems for the goalkeeper.

Despite Nigeria’s Super Eagles’ relentless attacks, Lesotho’s Crocodiles valiantly defended their goal, securing a historic draw against one of Africa’s most formidable football teams.

Council of Legal Education
The Nigerian Law School has hiked its tuition fee to N476,00 from N296,000.

The increase was disclosed in a circular to the students admitted to the Law School in Abuja for the 2023/2024 session.

The director-general of the Nigerian Law School, Isah Chiroma, signed the circular which was obtained on Thursday, November 16, 2023.

The trending circular showed almost a 200 percent increase in tuition of the school from around N296,000 to N476,000.

The hike in the tuition fee came amid economic hardship caused by the removal of the petrol subsidy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ganuwa and Abba Yusuf court
The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has fixed Friday for the judgment in the appeal Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf filed to challenge his removal by the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.

Recall that three-man panel of judges led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay had sacked Yusuf on September 20, 2023, by declaring 165,663 of his votes invalid because they were not signed or stamped by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The governor’s votes were then reduced to 853,939 while Ganuwa’s 890,705 votes remained.

Yusuf had rejected the tribunal verdict, which he described as “unfair” and “a miscarriage of justice”, and headed to the appeal court.

At the court, Wole Olanipekun, SAN, lead for Yusuf, asked that the judgement of the tribunal be set aside.

Kicking against the ruling on ballot papers, the senior lawyer said this is the first time in the history that a tribunal will annul an election over non-signing of the back of ballot papers.

He said the tribunal erred, arguing further that, that was the first time that a political party would file a matter without joining its candidate as a party in the petition and the candidate would declared winner of the polls.

But Akin Olujimi SAN, counsel for APC, countered him saying the Appeal Courts stated emphatically that the non-signing of ballots amounted to electoral malpractice.

He argued that INEC regulations have set out what presiding officers are to do at the point of voting, adding that the back of ballot papers must be signed and dated.

Chelsea could face punishment from the Premier League for historic violations of Financial Fair Play regulations uncovered by a new investigation.
New evidence has emerged indicating that former owner Roman Abramovich violated FFP rules while in charge of the Blues.
A joint investigation dubbed Cyprus Confidential by the Guardian, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, Germany’s Paper Trail Media, and other media outlets has revealed that Abramovich made hidden payments to key figures involved in Chelsea’s transfer business and managerial changes.
Federico Pastorello, an Italian football agent with close ties to ex-Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, is believed to have sold a 75% stake in American business Excellent Investment Fund to Abramovich’s Conibair Holdings company on July 18, 2017 – the same day Conte signed a new £9.6m-a-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
Crucially, Pastorello denies representing Conte on an official basis and declined to further comment on the investigation.
Cyprus Confidential also uncovered a £6m payment in March 2013 from Abramovich’s Leiston Holdings company to Gulf Value FZE for ‘advisory services […] related to […] sport research and consultancy’.
The deal was signed off on Gulf Value FZE’s side by John Bico-Penaque – the agent of Eden Hazard, who joined Chelsea from Lille at the start of that season. Penaque is said to have wanted a £6m commission payment for the deal that saw Hazard head to west London.
Other payments in question include various offerings worth £6m to companies associated with Zoran and Vladica Lemic – the latter of whom is a key adviser to Abramovich and played a notable role in recruiting Arjen Robben, Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Matic and Carlo Ancelotti.

The leaders of the unions made the decision on Wednesday night, after an extraordinary meeting that commenced at about 7 pm.

The appeal court in Lagos has affirmed the judgment of the tribunal, confirming the return of Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat as the Governor and Deputy Governor of Lagos state.

The justices of the court of appeal in a unanimous decision dismissed the appeal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for lack of merit.

The judgement was delivered by Justice Yargata Nimpa, Justice Samuel Bola and Justice Paul Bassey.

15/11/2023

Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo has announced that the union will proceed with its planned strike despite a standing court order prohibiting it.

Osifo justified the decision by accusing the Federal Government of regularly flouting court orders and setting a bad example for labour unions.

“We are copying what the Federal Government is doing,” Osifo said in an interview on Arise TV.

He pointed to instances where the government has ignored court orders, such as the case of Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, who was detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) despite court orders for his release.

Osifo further questioned the validity of the court order against the TUC’s strike, suggesting that it may be a “black market injunction” aimed at crippling labour movements. He challenged the authorities to arrest all Nigerian workers if they were serious about enforcing the order.

“I don’t have any Service,” Osifo said. “If you want to charge us to Court, we are here. We are not running away, Nigeria is our own. We will fight for the soul of this Country,” he added defiantly.

14/11/2023

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has extended the validity of the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes indefinitely.

This was contained in a statement issued and signed by Isa AbdulMumin, director, corporate communications, on Tuesday.

Recall that in March 2023, the supreme court had extended the deadline to phase out the old naira notes to December 31, 2023.

Before the CBN lifting the deadline, on November 8, 2023, the apex bank had issued a statement informing Nigerians that the old naira notes remain legal after reports of anxiety over its legality.

The apex bank on Tuesday said without prejudice, it has extended “the legal tender status deadline of the old design of N200, N500 and N1,000 denominations, ad infinitum”.

CBN said: “This is in line with international best practices and to forestall a repeat of earlier experiences.”

“Thus, all banknotes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in accordance with Section 20(5) of the CBN Act 2007, will continue to remain legal tender, ad infinitum, even beyond the initial December 31, 2023, deadline.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria is working with the relevant authorities to vacate the subsisting court ruling on the same subject.

“Accordingly, all CBN branches across the country will continue to issue and accept all denominations of Nigerian banknotes, old and redesigned, to and from deposit money banks (DMBs).

“The general public is enjoined to continue to accept all Naira banknotes (old or redesigned) for day-to-day transactions and handle these banknotes with utmost care, to safeguard and protect the lifecycle of the banknotes.”

CBN encouraged the general public to embrace alternative modes of payment such as e-channels, for day-to-day transactions.

Many passengers have sustained injuries as an aircraft belonging to Nigerian airline, ValueJet skidded off the runway at the Port Harcourt International Airport in Rivers State.

The incident occurred around 3:30 pm on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Although details of the incident are yet to be known, a source said many passengers were injured but no death was recorded.

“Value Jet Airline aircraft has skidded off the runway at the Port Harcourt International Airport, there are reports of injuries,” a source told Sahara Reporters.

“An aircraft has landed in an emergency way in Port Harcourt airport. While some persons were injured, no death was recorded.”

This is the third plane incident Nigeria’s aviation sector would be experiencing within a month.

On Sunday, an incident involving a Boeing 737 Jet with registration number 5N-BYQ owned by Aero Contractors Airlines, crash-landed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau stated that the incident was classified as ‘a serious accident.’

Similarly, another incident occurred last week when a private HS25B aircraft operated by Flint Aero narrowly avoided tragedy as it crash-landed on the runway at Ibadan, Oyo State.

Passengers on board, including the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, escaped death.
