Vedanta and Modern science

The nature of physical reality - by Rajarshi Nandy

In this book, Subhash Kak explores the intriguing questions at the cutting edge of consciousness studies. He not only presents the parallels between Vedanta and modern science but also spends a good deal of time exploring where the two profoundly disagree with each other and why.

Professor Subhash Kak, renowned Indologist, computer scientist, scholar and philosopher, explores these and various other paradoxes of philosophy and science which challenge, expand and modify our understanding of the natural world and reality. The book takes us through the rich history of the development of scientific thought, right up to the latest ideas in physics, mathematics, biology and compares them with the understanding and explorations of the Upanishads and Indian Rishis.

The Circle of Memory is an autobiography. It covers a broad canvas: Professor Subhash Kak's childhood in Kashmir, his scientific career in India and the United States, and vignettes of several prominent scholars. In addition to many personal anecdotes about his family and colleagues, it describes how his research that began with computer science came to embrace neural networks, quantum theory, history of science and the arts. It presents accounts of his discoveries in artificial intelligence, quantum theory, and Vedic astronomy, and how he became a part of a new movement trying to develop a science of consciousness.

Matter and Mind by Professor Subhash Kak is a new translation of the nearly 2,500-year old Vaisheshika Sutra of Kanada together with an introductory essay and a commentary. The Vaisheshika Sutra is one of the most important texts in the history of science that has not received the attention it deserves. It presents an ontology of reality that includes four kinds of fundamental atoms, two of which have mass and two that do not, as well as minds and consciousness. It also presents symmetry principles that it uses to infer properties of the basic atoms. Kanada's laws of motion are nearly identical to those of Newton.

This is the third edition of the classic book The Nature of Physical Reality by Professor Subhash Kak that presents current knowledge of physics and highlights significant Indian contributions to the subject. The book is as much about what is known as about what remains to be known and it speaks of a variety of paradoxes of mathematics and physics. It argues that there is a hidden order in physical reality that transcends the capacity of rational models and suggests that new research has the potential to illuminate the mystery of consciousness.
