The double standards and bias we face can be exhausting, demotivating, and even lead to burnout.

But it doesn't have to be this way!

When life gives you lemons …make lemonade.

*disclosure I enjoyed my program just it sat in a institution I …well. Yeah.

About a year ago I graduated with my PhD in HED. I can tell you that when I started this journey to completing my degree, I was very naïve and thought that earning my doctorate would give me a sense of power in a field that often felt like black women’s voices went unheard and carried a little weight.

I survived, being broken down again, and again.

I survived by learning how to trust myself.

I survived by relying on the people closest to me to support me.

I survived by learning who in my community could not support me the way I need it.

I survived by learning to trust my intuition.

I survived by building, relationships with people that genuinely cared about me and my story.

This is why I am so passionate about helping survivors of toxic workplaces, find peace and healing. Those experiences can be very detrimental to our personal and professional lives. But how we can be intentional and moving forward is the key to our peace and our happiness.

Let me help you find peace gain confidence, and demand the respect that you so deserve. Let me help you because I’ve been there, survived, and have done it while maintaining my humanity.

Back in the day 👵🏾, I studied music in college and I had a choir director who played a pivotal role in my success.

In a program plagued by anti-Blackness and misogynoir at a PWI, she stood by my side and offered me support that I did not recognize the depth of until recently.

Facing opposition from oppressive, racist, and dismissive program leaders and even my own vocal coach, her belief in me never changed. She was more confident in my vocal skills than I was.

She helped me find the confidence to make a difficult decision: to stay and fight or seek a life of peace.

And let me tell you, to this day I have not returned to vocal performance not even in front of my friends and family.

Despite dropping the program for my mental health, her advocacy for justice never ceased.

She fearlessly called out my mistreatment and used my experiences to empower and support other WOC in the music program. Her impact on my healing journey is invaluable.

But life can be bittersweet.

A few years ago, she passed away unexpectedly.

The pain of losing someone who, as one of the few white individuals in my life, spoke up for me and supported me without hesitation still lingers.

She was a true gem— She taught me how to navigate a world of harm as a Black woman while embracing her Irish roots and singing Irish folk songs like a true "Cailín". 🍀🎶

This story reminds me of the incredible power of allyship and the lasting impact we can have on each other's lives.

It fuels my passion as a Black life coach, supporting my fellow Black women DEI educators who have survived toxic workplaces and are now seeking to thrive in their careers.

Together, let's navigate the challenges, rewrite the narrative, and reclaim our power! 💪🏾✨

Remember when Auntie Michelle said 'When they go low, we go high'?

Well, I've upgraded that mantra.

I used to take a detour to hell, but guess what? I've found the path to healing, and it's a journey you can embark on too. 💪🏾💫

As a Black DEI educator, I've seen my fair share of toxic work environments. But let me tell you, it's not your forever destination.

It's just a pitstop on your road to greatness. 🛣️✨

I know the struggle is real, and it can be exhausting. But trust me when I say that you're not alone.

Together, we can navigate these challenges, embrace our power, and rewrite the narrative. 💪🏾💥

Burnout is a super complex issue that typically occurs when you are in a toxic work environment.

To heal from burnout for good you must start with yourself!

You have to build healthy habits and self-care strategies that you can tap into when you are feeling burnt out.

Here are five habits you can develop to help you heal from burnout:
1 - It may sound cheesy, but meditation, even when your mind is racing, will allow you to tap into a sense of calmness amidst physical chaos. Try starting with breath work if you feel your mind can't slow down.

2 - Creative expression can help you to tap into your inner creativity, reduce stress and anxiety, boost self-esteem, and foster a sense of playfulness and experimentation that helps you find peace during symptoms of burnout.

3 - Moving your body can help your body produce endorphins and serotonin which help promote feelings of happiness and pleasure, which allows you to make confident decisions from a place of peace rather stress when working to heal from burnout.

4 - I don't know about you, but I can easily blame myself when I am struggling with burnout. Positive self-talk helps to improve your mental and emotional wellbeing.

5 - I've said it over and over again. we must heal in community. Connect with your community and start to share what you are experiencing. If you do not have a community you trust, join me here! DM, comment, anything!
