THE STORY OF THE MECHAMIX
By now, many of you have heard of The Official Mechanism Podcast, some of you may even be subscribers, but most do not know who or what is behind the incredibly eclectic mix podcast. This podcast is run by just one person. I do everything from creating the mixes, to designing the cover art for each mix to controlling all social media accounts..it’s just me, there is no t
eam, The Official Mechanism Podcast is and has always been a solo effort. It all began in 1996 when I started my radio show Critical Bass which featured the latest and greatest in electronic dance music. During the 4 years it was on air, a group of friends and I started producing local dance parties in which we all DJ’d. Rather than using the moniker “DJ”, I preferred to use a one word name that encapsulated the hard machine driven drum’n’bass and hardcore I was going to play at the party. After seeing the word “mechanism” on the back of a drum’n’bass compilation cd, the name stuck, and the rest is history. Fast forward to 2007 and a friend on Live Journal (remember that site?) started doing a relatively new thing at the time, a podcast. After much investigation and encouragement, I began my podcast on Podomatic.com originally posting my old DJ sets from my radio show and dance parties. The podcast gave me a chance to mix a whole range of music not just dance music. I needed something to distinguish my mixes among the Google search swamp of megamixes, when I saw the term “mechamix” used on an anime picture and thought how perfect – a Mechanism megamix is now a “mechamix” and the legend was born. From very early on, I started doing band specific mechamixes such as Nsync, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and The Human League. These were wildly popular and featured on various fan sites. As I love electronic music so much, I intended to mix a wide variety of styles, as I did on my radio show and started doing genre specific mixes, which also proved to be wildly popular. Out of that came mix series such as Club Diva, Hard Bash, Drum’n’Bass Rumble, Trance Masters, House Nation, Techno Nations, Extended 80’s and Club 90’s, many of which continue today. I always liked introducing people to music they may have never heard before or giving them mixes of songs they love but in a new and exciting way. As the popularity of my mechamixes grew, I found them shared all over the internet, some “DJ’s” were claiming them as their own work, some were even sold as bootleg cd’s on Ebay in Europe. Because of this, I began adding audio tags at the beginning and end of every mix so that people knew this was actually one of my mechamixes! This is why you always get “This is a download from The Official Mechanism Podcast” at the beginning and “For more exclusive mechamixes…” at the end of every single mix I do. I also love cutting up samples from tv and movies and even Youtube to drop into the mixes, again it’s that thing of being distinctive, a mechamix is always fun. To think something I started for fun has turned into this incredible brand that is downloaded globally is a testament to the stamina and dedication of the wonderful fans and subscribers who have downloaded mix after mix or who have shared the love online on various social media accounts. I still do this for free, yeah I know, what an idiot, but it’s a passion I can’t shake off and when you can share your love for your passion with others who can see how dedicated you are to it, that’s an incredible gift to give and one that I know firsthand, has spread a lot of joy to countless others. So that’s the story of the mechamix. It’s been a hell of a long journey and I’ve loved every minute of it.

NEW MECHAMIX TIME!
Over the years I’ve made many Milli Vanilli mechamixes but I have never made one of the infamous Real Milli Vanilli. After listening to their one and only album THE MOMENT OF TRUTH (which came out almost immediately after the lip syncing scandal) I figured it’s time to give this one the mechamix it deserves. https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/mechanism/episodes/2024-09-06T14_03_12-07_00

As I love electronic music so much, I intended to mix a wide variety of styles, as I did on my radio show and started doing genre specific mixes, which also proved to be wildly popular. I also love cutting up samples from tv and movies and even Youtube to drop into the mixes, again it’s that thing of being distinctive, a mechamix is always fun.
With the pandemic hitting everyone hard and working from home and self-isolating being the norm, I began designing t-shirts and merch as another creative outlet and a way to fill in the days without work. The merch side of things has taken off faster than I imagined and has now spawned into 3 online stores – Teespring, Redubble and Teepublic. The popularity of the merch has also increased the audience of my podcast and has already made 2020 my biggest year in terms of downloads and audience.
But podcasts cost money…a lot of money to create and host. From buying the software to mix and edit the mechamixes, to the cost of hosting the podcast on Podomatic every year, to buying the music for the mechamixes…it all costs money. This is why merch has been so important to me because I can now use those funds to cover the ever increasing costs of running this podcast. It is also why I have started a Mixcloud Select account (which again costs me money to run) so that fans become subscribers and I can give them something extra every week.
July 2020 is the beginning of my 14th year producing this podcast, yes 14th year! To me that is phenomenal. To think something I started for fun has turned into this incredible brand that is downloaded globally is a testament to the stamina and dedication of the wonderful fans and subscribers who have downloaded mix after mix or bought tshirts of their favourite mechamix designs or who have shared the love online on various social media accounts.
