In the Matrix movies, if Trinity utters the words "dodge this" just before shooting an agent in the head at point blank range, wouldn't that of given the agent time to move out of the way given their ability to move so fast?
Because Trinity needed to and because agents can move fast but they are programs that do not react fast. Think of them as a drag racer that can move fast along a line but are slow to change direction.
Going through the scene, Trinity was no stranger to Agents. Previously - Cypher had advised Neo.
A little piece of advice. You see an agent… you do what we do: Run. You run your ass off
When an agent steps out of the helicopter to confront Neo and Trinity, Trinity knows they’re toast. There’s no place to run, the agent takes his time knowing his rats are caught in a trap
But then something unexpected happens. Neo fights back.
The Agent handles a barrage of bullets but this is new. The agents are fast to move but slow to process “new”.
Then it gets worse… Neo moves like they do.
The agent has witnessed something extraordinary that he can’t process. A threat unlike any others.
He struggles to understand this, focused entirely on this new thing unconcerned with anything else. He does land hits on Neo and he crumples to the ground. The agent is still 100% focused on Neo and walks over to him, uncertain about what would come next. However, Neo is stunned and waits.
The agent is so centered on Neo that he has completely neglected Trinity. Arriving at Neo and seeing him helpless, he has chosen to reconcile all of these new events as dismissible, and mutters “Only Human”.
Meanwhile, Trinity has been witnessing all this unfold and finally gets her wits about her. It’s also hard for her to process but she realizes she’s invisible to the agent right now. She has studied the agents and recognizes this opportunity. Emboldened, she moves in to execute the agent.
Note that when Trinity puts the gun to the agent’s head she strikes a confident pose and she says a confident thing. However, the actor Carrie-Anne Moss added a small detail to the scene.
Her hand trembles.
She’s about to execute someone unkillable. In the moment she acts one way but is feeling quite another. The “Dodge This” flare was the only way she could make herself soldier up because she’s scared.
Not just fear for herself but for how important it all is. It’s a moment that changes the world for Trinity. She now believes Neo is the one, she now believes that agents are not invulnerable.
