Musician John Baldwin has 77 candles on his birthday cake today. In 1964, John began studio session work with Decca Records. From then until 1968, he played on hundreds of recording sessions. He soon expanded his studio work by playing keyboards, arranging and undertaking general studio direction, resulting in his services coming under much demand. He worked with numerous artists including the Rolling Stones on Their Satanic Majesties Request (his string arrangement is heard on "She's a Rainbow"); Herman's Hermits; Donovan (on "Sunshine Superman," "Hurdy Gurdy Man," and "Mellow Yellow"); Jeff Beck; Françoise Hardy; Cat Stevens; Rod Stewart; Shirley Bassey; Lulu; and numerous others. As well as recording sessions with Dusty Springfield, John also played bass for her Talk of the Town series of performances. His arranging and playing on Donovan's "Sunshine Superman" resulted in producer Mickie Most using his services as choice arranger for many of his own projects, with Tom Jones, Nico, Wayne Fontana, the Walker Brothers, and many others. In 1967, Most, as music supervisor, also tabbed Baldwin to arrange the music for Herman's Hermits' theatrical film Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter, released in January 1968. Such was the extent of Johns' studio work – amounting to hundreds of sessions – that he said years later that "I can't remember three-quarters of the sessions I was on."

It was during his time as a studio musician that he decided to take on a stage name. The name he choose, John Paul Jones.

Then he played with Led Zeppelin.

Happy Birthday John!!! What a talented guy!

Today August 9, 2022 would have been our Sleepers guitarist Michael Belfer’s 63rd Birthday. It has taken me 4 months to come to grips with his loss this last spring… enough to finally write this tribute in an observance of our tumultuous disjointed friendship and his profound contributions to the world of music—> rock, punk, post punk, grunge and avante garde and more.
Ironically and tragically, he was not taken by any of the demons of his past, but by a rare insidious respiratory affliction.
He was with his fiancé and his family at the end and he knew he was loved. We should all be so lucky.
I feel fortunate to have talked (and argued) again with him near the end of his earthly visit. Yes, he was a celestial spirit who communicated magnificently for us and with his fellow musicians thru his left-handed Les Paul Custom and Hamer guitars, much as another left-handed other-worldly spiritual musician, Jimi Hendrix; both kindred spirits with completely unique styles, crossing psychedelic boundaries to achieve and create epic influence across dense and myriad musical landscapes.
We met in 1977 while I was composing and rehearsing with drummer-turning-singer Ricky Williams as we were preparing for his departure from Crime as their drummer. Michael, along with his friend, drummer Tim Mooney, completed the other half of what would become the Sleepers. We were just “kids” back then. I was the oldest at 23 and Michael the youngest at 17.
What came next can only be described as magical. Michael Belfer on guitar was what the Edge, Johnny Marr and others from that era could only dream about…a pure distillation of cosmic psychedelic dusting with raw energy, subtle nuance, rhythm, and unique melodic guitar techniques no one before or since has ever duplicated… and all topped off with a ballsy rock ‘n’ roll swagger.
Michael went on to achieve greatness on guitar with the Sleepers, Tuxedo Moon, Torcher, Lil Tiger, Clocks of Paradise, Senquist Experience, Black Lab and others, evolving and metamorphosing all along the way.
And last Sunday more than a few of us, his closest friends and the musicians he grew up with, mostly from the mid peninsula, met up and celebrated with his fiancé Adrienne in San Francisco on a perfect summer day to bid a fond farewell with love and remembrance to our dear Michael David Belfer. Happily, many more will undoubtedly experience his unique and spiritual gifts to music in succeeding generations.
Happy Birthday Michael !

Alvin Lee (born Graham Anthony Barnes 19.12.1944 – 6.03.2013) was an English singer and guitarist, best known as the lead vocalist and lead guitarist of the blues rock band Ten Years After. Alvin says… one of my favourite tracks from my album ‘1994’. It has George Harrison on slide guitar an...

The current landmark issue of Uncut celebrates 300, no less, of the greatest albums over the past 25 years.

Congratulations to John who was included in this epic list:

173. John Murry "The Graceless Age" (2012)

'The Mississippi exile's first and best of three quality solo albums to date. His rich baritone drags itself through a narcotic haze of viscous feedback, fizzing static, mournful strings and piano, revealing melodic hooks and glints of pitch-black humour. Centred around the confessional overdose epic 'Little Coloured Balloons', these addictive tales of drugs, dysfunction and heartache are refreshing in their excruciating honesty. An instant classic of doomed romance'.

"The Graceless Age" celebrates its 10 year anniversary this year.
Now, thanks to Rubyworks Records John's first record is being reissued on April 23 for as a half-speed master, from the original audio source on two golden vinyl discs.
