Authors, set your narrators up for success with these resources.

Audition scripts
Scripts that are 2-3 pages long respect the narrator’s time. This translates into about 5 minutes of audio. You’ll know quickly whether or not a narrator’s sound resonates with your book.

Character guide
If it’s a fiction book, you'll want to let the narrator know how to pronounce the character’s names, what accents they might have, and the personality you envision for these characters.

Pronunciation guide
This is great for a non-fiction book with lots of technical terms you know will show up often. Giving your narrator a pronunciation guide helps them read terms and names correctly.

When we’re preparing our clients for their first podcast episode, here are three sins we warn them about so there’s no need to ask for forgiveness later.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Never formally starting the podcast.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sometimes the conversation with your guest is so good from the start. You just start talking and naturally transition into the interview. It’s important to introduce them and give them a chance to say hello before starting the conversation.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Talking over your guest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Recording a podcast is different from a conversation. Talking over one another can be hard to digest for the listener and also affect the audio quality. Let them finish their thoughts (you can take notes if you want) and then follow up on your next question.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Not setting up your guest to talk about their hustle.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Keep in mind that your guest is doing you a favor by being on your podcast. Add value to your guest by asking about their success. Maybe your guest wrote a book or has their own podcast even. It’s a small way to give back.

Doing anything for the first time is scary. You’re trying a new skill and that can come with growing pains. But fear can be a good thing - it’s a sign that you’re willing to grow into a direction that you’re passionate about.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don’t let that fear prevent you from trying something new.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The idea of getting in front of a mic and recording your voice can be terrifying. What we love at Pinto is giving our clients the peace of mind to know that it’s okay to mess up. We can re-record lines and remove things that don’t work.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just the idea of having this peace of mind makes our clients sound so much better. They show up behind the mic with the confidence to speak with their own voice.

You already wrote the whole book, let’s make the most out of it together. The audiobook process may seem daunting but it doesn't have to be. It doesn't require any prior knowledge or equipment. You can record the book on your own or we can connect you to a narrator. We will help you produce the book from start to finish. DM us for more information.

Creating a video podcast is not difficult to do.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s similar to a zoom call. A service like Zencastr facilitates the conversation and can record the audio and video of you and your guest separately allowing for an edited, professional podcast.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After finishing your interview and downloading the files, send them to Pinto. We will combine, edit, and master them into a ready to publish video podcast.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Are you ready to get your message out there with a video podcast? We provide video as well as audio deliverables so that you can upload to both video and audio platforms. DM us for more information.

When narrating an audiobook, punch and roll is a great way to fix your lines while recording. You can record over the part you misread with the corrected version. Punch and roll makes you sound professional and knowledgeable, but it can be tricky to learn if you’ve never done it before. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are three steps to simplify the process:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Pick your recording software of choice. Most software options include punch and roll.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Learn the key commands. Knowing these allows you to get into a flow so you work efficiently.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Match your previous take. Listen to your previously read line and focus on matching that cadence for the punch and roll.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We’d love to hear what you wish you knew when you started punch and rolls!

We have worked with a large network of professional narrators and we love connecting them to their next opportunity.

When you reach out to us looking for narration, we ask what type of voice you're looking for and we’ll send you auditions from people we think would be a good fit. We understand that this is your book and we know you have a clear vision. We want to bridge the gap between your mind and the narrator’s performance as much as possible.

We will handle recording and production coordination as well as post-production editing, proofing, and mastering. Typically, we complete every step of this process within one to two months, delivering ACX-mastered audio to you once production is completed.

When people think of creating a podcast, they often imagine they’d be responsible for every step of the process. The idea of recording, editing, creating metadata and publishing sounds like too much of an obstacle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But with a production partner, like Pinto, each episode will only take one to two hours. Once you’ve recorded, we handle every step of the process. We’ll edit your content, highlighting key moments. We’ll master the audio, making you and your guest sound great. And we’ll create show notes, giving you an edge with metadata that communicates well with Google.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
DM us for recording tips and microphone recommendations to get you started - we’re happy to help!

As podcasts grow in popularity, so too does the desire for visuals. Around 60% of communication is nonverbal, so including video increases engagement. Additionally, video podcasts unlock YouTube's unique audience and increased visibility.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

One of Pinto’s values is enjoying the content creation process. There’s no need to rush when you’re at the beginning stages. We like to come up with a timeline that sets you up for success.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Typically we like to be a month ahead of schedule on a consistently-releasing podcast. That involves having ready-to-release episodes that have already gone through the full review process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here at Pinto we plan for the worst case scenario so if it happens, we have a structure in place for it to not affect your release schedule.

Here’s our three step solution to prepare your audio for editing:

1. Apply a high-pass filter: The human voice can only go so low. Remove the frequencies below the human voice - 83 Hz for men, 121 Hz for women.

2. Apply de-noise and de-click: Using a de-noise plugin can decrease the noise of loud rooms and AC; a de-click plugin can decrease dry mouth noises. We recommend iZotope plugins!

3. Match speaker levels: In an interview format, check the volume of both the interviewer and the interviewee’s audio. A good first step is to match their volumes to make it easier for mastering later on.

When recording a podcast we recommend using a software that creates separate audio tracks. Separate audio tracks are useful for being able to cut things and make things sound as clean as possible. Let’s say you take a sip of water or your dog is barking, we are able to strip that out of the audio while leaving your guest’s audio uncut.

is a great option and also has this capability.

We don’t expect you to know how to record the best audio. We offer our advice as a resource to support our clients in producing high-quality audio.

We do our best to set you up for success. Being open to our expert advice is better for everybody in the long run.

Some of our most successful clients came to us with no knowledge of how to record their audio. Our advice and their open mindedness allowed us to produce something everyone is proud of.

We’ve been working with Larisa on her video podcast Diaries of a Life Coach since January of 2021. Larisa records her interviews using Zencastr, and we edit/master the video and audio into a cohesive final product. We deliver both video and audio files, so Larisa can upload to both YouTube and audio streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

This excerpt is from episode 15 with Veronica Natzia. Take a listen as Veronica discusses how focusing on her strengths allowed her to persevere and overcome difficult circumstances.

Show notes are a text counterpart to your podcast. They can include interesting quotes, time stamps to content, relevant links and more.

Show notes work well with search engine optimization and it helps listeners navigate through the podcast.

This is a service we offer to our podcast clients. We’ll write show notes and share them with you. Once you approve it, we can also upload your podcast with show notes to a podcast publishing platform.

A client came to us with 8-year-old audio for her audiobook. She started to record this book and ran into health issues. Years later, she started uploading the chapters to Youtube and sharing them with her friend group. To her surprise, they were really interested in her stories. Once she finished releasing the audio she had, her friends were left wanting more.

We worked with her to record the second half of her audiobook, taking care to match the new sound to her original sound. We were able to publish the book on Audible earlier this year.

Do you have anything you’re sitting on? Whether it’s recorded audio, written text, or just an idea that you’ve had for a while, it’s never too late to take the next step.

Here are three things to avoid when recording for an audiobook:
1. Settling for a bad microphone.
Listeners expect your book to sound like it was recorded in a studio, not through your laptop microphone. You can get close to studio level quality by recording at home with a high quality microphone.

2. Not taking the time to consider the space you’re recording in.
Even with a good microphone, if you’re recording in your kitchen, your sound will be full of reverb. Try to record in a smaller space with less hard surfaces to keep sound reflections at a minimum.

3. Not proofing your narration before sending.
Even the best narrators make mistakes while recording. Catching these mistakes before publishing your book to Audible will help you sound professional.

All you need is an idea if you’re thinking about starting a podcast. Once you have your vision, we can help you from recording to publishing.

First we would recommend a microphone, software and best practices to produce high quality audio. From there we would work with you to create a structure for your podcast. We provide tips on how to keep your podcast fresh and relevant along the way. Once your podcast is recorded, we can edit out any fluff. We really focus on content editing which makes your podcast easy to listen to. And finally we use EQ and leveling to make each episode a consistent volume throughout. DM us for more information.

Our Founder, Peter, was on a long road trip and didnt have service in his car. He had a few songs downloaded as well as an audiobook. After a week of listening to the same handful of albums, Peter turned to his audiobook, World War Z. It was refreshing to listen to something more mentally engaging. Listening to stories about the zombie apocalypse in the middle of nowhere really heightened the experience.

What memories do you have of a podcast or audiobook that improved your day?

24/06/2021

Take a listen to 1-900-Old-Ladys: The Lost Art of Making Lefse by L. Lee Starr, a clever story about two elderly North Dakota sisters who start a 1-900 line in secret to pay the bills.

We completed production for this audiobook in early 2021, but Starr had begun recording it in 2013! When she came to us with half of the book already recorded 8 years prior, we offered production advice on how to record to match the original sound as closely as possible. And while we were mastering her audio, we used EQ and de-reverb to create a consistent sound.

This was a uniquely challenging project and we're very proud of the result! We look forward to her next book and hope that this time we can record it all in the same year!

This is something you would never think about.

Here is a peek behind the curtain.

If you’re listening to an audiobook there is room tone throughout and most people don't even notice it.

Room tone is the subtle low tone sound that you can find in every room. Every room’s room tone is different. Even high end studios have their own unique sound.

We recommend recording 30-60 seconds of your recording space. Make sure to either step away from the mic or remain as silent as possible while recording.

We use room tone to cover up breaths and alter pacing.

Next time you’re listening to an audiobook, see if you can notice the room tone. We recommend listening with headphones!
