Authors, set your narrators up for success with these resources.

Audition scripts
Scripts that are 2-3 pages long respect the narrator’s time. This translates into about 5 minutes of audio. You’ll know quickly whether or not a narrator’s sound resonates with your book.

Character guide
If it’s a fiction book, you'll want to let the narrator know how to pronounce the character’s names, what accents they might have, and the personality you envision for these characters.

Pronunciation guide
This is great for a non-fiction book with lots of technical terms you know will show up often. Giving your narrator a pronunciation guide helps them read terms and names correctly.

When we’re preparing our clients for their first podcast episode, here are three sins we warn them about so there’s no need to ask for forgiveness later.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

1. Never formally starting the podcast.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sometimes the conversation with your guest is so good from the start. You just start talking and naturally transition into the interview. It’s important to introduce them and give them a chance to say hello before starting the conversation.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Talking over your guest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Recording a podcast is different from a conversation. Talking over one another can be hard to digest for the listener and also affect the audio quality. Let them finish their thoughts (you can take notes if you want) and then follow up on your next question.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Not setting up your guest to talk about their hustle.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Keep in mind that your guest is doing you a favor by being on your podcast. Add value to your guest by asking about their success. Maybe your guest wrote a book or has their own podcast even. It’s a small way to give back.

When narrating an audiobook, punch and roll is a great way to fix your lines while recording. You can record over the part you misread with the corrected version. Punch and roll makes you sound professional and knowledgeable, but it can be tricky to learn if you’ve never done it before. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are three steps to simplify the process:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Pick your recording software of choice. Most software options include punch and roll.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Learn the key commands. Knowing these allows you to get into a flow so you work efficiently.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Match your previous take. Listen to your previously read line and focus on matching that cadence for the punch and roll.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Here’s our three step solution to prepare your audio for editing:

1. Apply a high-pass filter: The human voice can only go so low. Remove the frequencies below the human voice - 83 Hz for men, 121 Hz for women.

2. Apply de-noise and de-click: Using a de-noise plugin can decrease the noise of loud rooms and AC; a de-click plugin can decrease dry mouth noises. We recommend iZotope plugins!

3. Match speaker levels: In an interview format, check the volume of both the interviewer and the interviewee’s audio. A good first step is to match their volumes to make it easier for mastering later on.

When recording a podcast we recommend using a software that creates separate audio tracks. Separate audio tracks are useful for being able to cut things and make things sound as clean as possible. Let’s say you take a sip of water or your dog is barking, we are able to strip that out of the audio while leaving your guest’s audio uncut.

Show notes work well with search engine optimization and it helps listeners navigate through the podcast.

This is a service we offer to our podcast clients. We’ll write show notes and share them with you. Once you approve it, we can also upload your podcast with show notes to a podcast publishing platform.

A client came to us with 8-year-old audio for her audiobook. She started to record this book and ran into health issues. Years later, she started uploading the chapters to Youtube and sharing them with her friend group. To her surprise, they were really interested in her stories. Once she finished releasing the audio she had, her friends were left wanting more.

We worked with her to record the second half of her audiobook, taking care to match the new sound to her original sound. We were able to publish the book on Audible earlier this year.

Here are three things to avoid when recording for an audiobook:
1. Settling for a bad microphone.
Listeners expect your book to sound like it was recorded in a studio, not through your laptop microphone. You can get close to studio level quality by recording at home with a high quality microphone.

2. Not taking the time to consider the space you’re recording in.
Even with a good microphone, if you’re recording in your kitchen, your sound will be full of reverb. Try to record in a smaller space with less hard surfaces to keep sound reflections at a minimum.

3. Not proofing your narration before sending.
Even the best narrators make mistakes while recording. Catching these mistakes before publishing your book to Audible will help you sound professional.

Our Founder, Peter, was on a long road trip and didnt have service in his car. He had a few songs downloaded as well as an audiobook. After a week of listening to the same handful of albums, Peter turned to his audiobook, World War Z. It was refreshing to listen to something more mentally engaging. Listening to stories about the zombie apocalypse in the middle of nowhere really heightened the experience.

Take a listen to 1-900-Old-Ladys: The Lost Art of Making Lefse by L. Lee Starr, a clever story about two elderly North Dakota sisters who start a 1-900 line in secret to pay the bills.

We completed production for this audiobook in early 2021, but Starr had begun recording it in 2013! When she came to us with half of the book already recorded 8 years prior, we offered production advice on how to record to match the original sound as closely as possible. And while we were mastering her audio, we used EQ and de-reverb to create a consistent sound.

This was a uniquely challenging project and we're very proud of the result! We look forward to her next book and hope that this time we can record it all in the same year!

Here is a peek behind the curtain.

If you’re listening to an audiobook there is room tone throughout and most people don't even notice it.

Room tone is the subtle low tone sound that you can find in every room. Every room’s room tone is different. Even high end studios have their own unique sound.

We recommend recording 30-60 seconds of your recording space. Make sure to either step away from the mic or remain as silent as possible while recording.

We use room tone to cover up breaths and alter pacing.

Next time you’re listening to an audiobook, see if you can notice the room tone. We recommend listening with headphones!

The holidays are here, and so is the 12th and final day of our 2023 year in review. We provided post-production for this title that focuses on deconstructing conditioned belief systems and the power of forgiveness.

We’ve been loving sharing our work with you! It’s day 11, and today we’re listening to The Hero’s Recusants: Akynd Chronicles, Book 1, written by Daniel Lehman, and narrated by Brandon Goodling. The story explores 4 powerful Akynds and the burden of responsibility that comes with their great power.

Our 2023 review - much like the year - is wrapping up quickly. For day 10, listen to Butch Knowles on the NFR Extra Podcast, with hosts Andy Seiler, Brilynn Bentley, and Steve Goedert. This podcast features the top names in rodeo and discussions of the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

It’s day 9 of our 2023 review. Enjoy If Frogs Could Fly, written and narrated by E.B. Mendel. This psychedelic romp is a satirical exploration of an amphibious pandemic - and it’s just as much of a wild and unexpected ride as it sounds!

For day 8 of our look back on 2023, we’re excited to share our full production of Legaland, written by Jordan Zlotolow. This audiobook was recorded locally in Atlanta by Blake Long and narrated by Jacob York. The story is about Jeff Stymeweather’s journey into Legaland: an area devoid of any laws, but not, as Jeff discovers, without a code.

Our 12-day 2023 retrospective is already on day 7 - over halfway through! For today’s audio, listen to Sean DeLaney’s audiobook, Masterpiece in Progress. 365 motivational passages guide listeners through their year, offering life lessons and wisdom.

Day 6! Listen to host Shana Cosgrove’s interview on the Outspoken podcast, featuring Violet Apple, CEO of Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. In this excerpt, Violet talks about the resiliency of girls in the Girls Scouts organization and why they give her hope for the future.

It’s already day 5 of our look back on 2023! Today, we’re sharing Confident, Calm, and Clutch - written and narrated by Valerie Alston. This author-narrated audiobook explores the importance of mental strength and confidence in athletic success. If you’ve ever watched a clutch athlete close out the final moments of a game, you’ve witnessed the importance of mental resilience.

For day 4 of our look back, listen to Your Body is Your Brain, written by Amanda Blake, and narrated by Marisa Blake. This audiobook explores the often under-appreciated connection between the mind and body, and how scientific research more and more supports the importance of this connection.

For day 3 of looking back on 2023, listen to Kim Tobin’s performance on Decanted, written by Linda Sheehan. We handled post-production for this title, which explores Samantha’s escape from the corporate rat race to the vineyards of France.

For day 2 of our 2023 review, take a listen to Joey T. and the Winter Holiday Worries, written by Sivan Hong and narrated by Tamara J. Suber. We’ve collaborated with Sivan a few times, and this may be the most relatable story yet - figuring out how to adjust to the chaos of the holidays!
