Hello all,
Vintage Jazz Mart 196 is with the printers now and due back by the end of the week with Research, Records and Reviews as always under a beautiful cover photo of the talented, underrated bassist and bandleader Thelma Terry (1901-1966), courtesy of Dick Raichelson. I hope you like it!
We present three featured articles in this issue. Dick Raichelson sends an updated piece on Thelma Terry and the Berlyn Baylor connection, with personnel and biographical details of the playboys/troubadours and more photos. LeonBismarkBixBeiderbecke group founder and Bix authority Albert Haim sends an interesting survey of the Fats Waller/Jo Trent composition Whiteman Stomp, putting the piece in context. Anthony Barnett, who has produced many beautiful books on jazz violinists over the last thirty years (see www.abar.net) sends a piece on the connection between Edwin Swayze, Stuff Smith and Jelly Roll Morton - Anthony has been on the case with this one for several years and seeks information so please drop him a line if you can help. Mark Berresford pens a tribute to collector, Irish small mammal expert, and champion chess player Prof. James Fairley.
We have the usual features including Colin's Discographical Ramblings, Reviews, Wants - and - as always plenty of quality Jazz and Blues records and other goodies for auction!
If you are a classic jazz fan, be sure to contact me for a sample issue or subscribe via www.vjm.biz.
All the best!
Brian.
