Hello all,
Vintage Jazz Mart 200 is back from the printers with Research, Records and Reviews as always. I hope you'll like it! This is a milestone issue, a year after we hit the milestone of being 70 years old and still going strong! This is my 15th issue as editor and publisher and have enjoyed this and learned so much. As part of marking this milestone we have a special colour pullout in the centre including photos of our founder, Trevor Benwell courtesy of his son Mike; a few words from Russell Shor, Mark Berresford and our sole charter subscriber who has been a reader since 1953, Jehangir Dalal.

We have three featured articles in this issue. Nick Dellow and Albert Haim send Part 2 of their comprehensive series on multi-talented Fred Elizalde. Russ Shor has unearthed an advert for King Oliver playing at Kelly's Stables after the mass walkout in in Creole Jazz Band; and Markus Schnellbach makes his debut with an interesting piece on Frank Gaurente.

We have the usual features including Colin's Discographical Ramblings, Reviews - and - as always plenty of quality Jazz, Blues, Ragtime and Gospel records and other goodies for auction and sale!

Print copies will be sent in the coming days globally; online issues will be distributed in the next day or two; and online auctions will be uploaded over the weekend.

If you are a classic jazz fan, be sure to subscribe via our www.vjm.biz/index.html website or contact me for a sample issue, and please spread the word about VJM!

All the best,
Brian.

Cushion Foot Stomp (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkHOkq7DJxw) released on OKeh 8462 was recorded 97 years ago today on 13 April 1927 by "Clarence Williams' Washboard Five". It's one of the greatest jazz records as far as I'm concerned and shows how it's done - all five are in top form: Ed Allen is superb on open cornet as well as with straight and "doorknob" (Conn practice) mutes; Buster Bailey's clarinet flows nicely; Clarence Williams himself comps well on piano and remains himself on vocal while doing his best Louis Armstrong impression; Cyrus St. Clair, one of the unsung jazz heroes, plays solid tuba in solo and anchoring things firmly; while the great Floyd Casey's washboard playing was cooler than his name - he has rightly been called a "washboard wizard" given the range of sounds and pitches he got out of this simple household tool with thimbles.
All the best, Brian.
