PRESIDENT HICHILEMA REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE AND VALUE-ADDED MINING
By Idah Livingi

Lusaka, Thursday, October 2025 — President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transforming Zambia’s mining industry from a raw mineral exporter into a value-adding and job-creating sector that benefits all citizens.

Speaking during the Zambia Mining and Investment Insaka, held under the theme “Unlocking Africa’s Wealth Advancing Sustainable Mining, Beneficiation and Value Addition,” President Hichilema said the theme reflects Zambia’s renewed mining agenda aimed at ensuring that mineral wealth translates into tangible prosperity for the people.

“For over a century, copper has defined Zambia’s economy, yet our nation has not fully optimized its capacity to leverage this natural endowment for the prosperity of our people,” he said. “This paradox is unacceptable our citizens deserve value, not poverty.”

The Head of State emphasized that Zambia’s mineral resources must serve as instruments of peace and unity, not conflict or division. He called for continental collaboration in moving from extraction to production, ensuring Africa’s resources generate jobs, industries, and shared prosperity.

President Hichilema outlined the government’s ongoing policy, legal, and institutional reforms in the mining sector, designed to promote safe, transparent, and accountable operations. He added that Zambia is diversifying its mineral portfolio beyond copper to include gold, manganese, nickel, cobalt, and lithium critical minerals driving the global green-energy transition.

He further reaffirmed his administration’s vision to make Zambia a model for responsible and sustainable mining, where every tonne of ore extracted contributes to education, youth empowerment, and national dignity.

“Together, we can turn Zambia’s mineral wealth into a true blessing for generations to come,” President Hichilema said.

A DIGITAL AFRICA WHERE NO ONE IS LEFT BEHIND
By Idah Livingi
Chongwe, Zambia – October 2025

In the grand hall filled with delegates from across the continent, the message from Zambia’s Vice President Mutale Nalumango was clear and heartfelt Africa’s digital transformation must begin and end with its people.

She looked beyond the bright screens and policy documents, reminding everyone that behind every innovation is a story a young woman seeking opportunity, a teacher hoping to reach her pupils online, a farmer checking weather updates before planting.

“Technology must make life better for our people,” she said softly, her voice carrying through the room. “For the girl in the village dreaming of becoming a software engineer, for the mother who wants to sell her products online, for the youth who sees technology as hope for tomorrow this is who we are working for.”

The Digital Government Africa Summit 2025, held in Chongwe, was more than a gathering of policymakers. It was a space of shared dreams of an Africa that uses technology to heal divisions, spark creativity, and open doors for millions who have long been left behind.

Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati reminded participants that real transformation happens when governments, innovators, and learning institutions come together to create digital tools that solve real problems. “A system that helps a farmer track rainfall, or a student attend class remotely that’s the kind of technology Africa needs,” he said.

And from the Smart Zambia Institute, Percy Chinyama added a voice of unity: “Digitalization has the power to bring Africa together. It can turn our diversity into strength and give everyone a seat at the table.”

As the summit came to a close, there was a quiet but powerful sense of purpose a collective belief that Africa’s digital future will not be built in boardrooms alone, but in homes, schools, and communities.

A future where technology serves humanity.
A future where no one is left behind.

“This happened at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest, an American swimmer fainted during her routine and sank to the bottom while the crowd kept clapping.

Only her coach noticed, dove in fully clothed, and pulled her to safety. So many people are quietly sinking while the world keeps clapping. We all need that one person who sees the pain no one else does”.

Chavuma Community Reclaims Livelihoods as Government Tackles Human-Wildlife Conflict
By Idah Livingi

Chavuma, North-Western Province – October 8, 2025:
After years of despair caused by hippos destroying their crops along the Zambezi River plains, the people of Chavuma are finally seeing hope restored thanks to swift government intervention that has brought lasting relief to farming families.

What was once a story of loss and frustration has turned into one of renewed confidence and resilience, as the government moves to resolve long-standing humanwildlife conflicts threatening food security in the region.

For years, farmers in Chiyeke area and surrounding communities have watched helplessly as hippos trampled gardens and destroyed fields their only source of income and sustenance. Despite repeated appeals, help seemed far away.

That changed when the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, under the Ministry of Tourism, responded decisively to the community’s plea. A coordinated operation led by Mr. Chihunda Dominic and Mr. Musonds, in collaboration with wildlife officers from Zambezi and Mufumbwe, carried out a joint assessment that paved the way for government-led mitigation measures.

At the centre of this breakthrough was Mr. Njamba Kakoma Masumba, a son of Chavuma and RM Coordinator for the Muvombo Development Initiative, who used his own resources to liaise with government offices in Lusaka, Mufumbwe, and Chavuma to ensure the matter received urgent attention.

Today, communities once living in fear are back in their gardens feeding their families, earning an income, and sending children to school.

“We had lost hope, but this action by government has restored our confidence,” said one farmer. “This is leadership that listens and acts.”

Local headmen and residents have hailed the New Dawn administration for demonstrating genuine responsiveness and care for rural communities, describing it as a “Listening Government indeed.”

They also extended heartfelt appreciation to:
The Government of the Republic of Zambia
The Lusaka, Mufumbwe, and Zambezi Wildlife Teams
Mr. Njamba Kakoma Masumba for his selfless community service

The community has since renamed their oncetroubled area from “jhinahu” meaning a place of lost hope to “kakukumwaza”, meaning “the secret peace of the heart that brings hope.”

As the hippo threat subsides and food gardens flourish once more, the people of Chavuma say they now feel seen, heard, and protected proof, they add, that inclusive governance is transforming lives even in Zambia’s most remote corners.

ZAMBIA LAUNCHES FIRST ELECTRIC VEHICLE TO DRIVE GREEN ECONOMY FORWARD

Zambia has taken a bold step toward a cleaner and more cost-efficient future with the launch of its first electric vehicle (EV) under the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment.

Speaking at the inaugural Chief Executives’ Forum themed “Driving Zambia Forward, the Green Way”, Minister of Green Economy and Environment Hon. Mike Elton Mposha, MP hailed the launch as “a practical demonstration of leadership in implementing the country’s Green Economy Agenda.” He urged the private sector to embrace e-mobility as a key driver of sustainable development.

Permanent Secretary for Green Economy and environment said the ministry’s procurement of its first EV represents “a commitment to evidence-based implementation, not just compliance.”

A pilot assessment revealed that an EV can travel from Lusaka to Kitwe about 357 kilometres on a full charge costing roughly K200 worth of electricity from ZESCO. A similar petrol-powered car would consume between K1,500 and K2,000 in fuel, saving between K1,300 and K1,800 per trip while cutting about 74 kilograms of carbon emissions.

To further reduce environmental impact, the ministry has installed a solar-powered charging station, allowing the vehicle to operate entirely on renewable energy. “This relieves pressure on the national grid and demonstrates Zambia’s ability to harness its abundant solar and hydro resources,” the PS added.

The Minister noted that the transition to e-mobility is supported by enabling policies, including standards set by the Energy Regulation Board and the soon-to-be-finalised Electric Mobility Policy and Strategic Framework.

The initiative aligns with Zambia’s Eighth National Development Plan and the commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 47% by 2030. Officials also highlighted investment opportunities in EV assembly, charging infrastructure, fleet electrification, and green finance products.

“This electric vehicle is a moving emblem of national readiness,” the PS told stakeholders. “The market is open, the policy framework is clear, and the time to invest is now.”
