When you make art, you have no idea how it’ll affect someone else. For someone to write that Will to Wild was life-changing, it feels pretty good. The book is now available in paperback and apparently just also sold foreign rights in Italy. Coming to the Dolomites soon. ⛰️ the one thing that has been the most interesting is actually spreading the word about this book. That part has been the hardest. If you get a chance, please tell a friend or gift it to an anyone who likes adventure or you think might need some in their life. It’s now available in paperback so packs light and is easy to take on the trail. Thanks to all of you who endorsed this book especially the cool cats mentioned here, and also to those view who’ve written reviews, and shared it with a friend.

For the final Wild Ideas Worth Living episode of the year, we went DEEP 💧💦, and also turned back the mic on YOU. I know I look a little creepy underwater, but hey, we had some fun with this shoot. This year of Wild Ideas Worth Living was one where I actually cried during an episode, where my awesome team and Sylvia Thomas, turned the mic back on ME to talk about my book (Will to Wild) and my own story, and where they went out and even did their own episode without me. Our team even won an award! We got best branded podcast in the Signal awards. We also lost in one category to none other than Michael J. Fox, which felt pretty cool to be in the arena with a childhood hero and crush (I love that preppy style from Family Ties).

Best of all beyond awards, we got SOOO MANY Letters from YOU... a show that motivated you to take up running, sign up for a surf lesson, take your parents hiking, look up at the stars, go camping, or just live a little more wildly. THANK YOU! For the final episode, we also are hearing from many of YOU listeners, some which we are bringing fully on the show for 2024.

This Podcast is something I look forward to every week . I work with amazing people (Jenny, Hanna, Sylvia, Annie, Paolo and Joe), and best of all, I get to connect with great humans like you. Thanks for listening and being on this awesome ride. I hope you enjoy the recap episode with plenty of bloopers and some bits from some of you … 📸1

Eight years apart. Can you guess which one is today? Light shorts or blue shorts?
Johnnys secret to ageless wisdom (in my opinion) since we get asked this a lot:

😎He’s nice to everyone (even while surfing which I love because surfing with grumps really crushes the vibe).
😎He is super kind especially to older people and kids.
😎He loves to PLAY.
😎He lets people cut him off driving.
😎He really emphasizes his health as a big part of what most consider wealth.
😎He doesn’t spend too much time on screens. His insta feed is all training, handstands, and surfing —it’s super fun.
😎He leads with love.
😎He knows everyone is going through something he can’t always see so isn’t one to teach someone in the wrong a lesson.
😎He doesn’t need lots of “stuff” to be happy…Maybe just few surfboards. 😂
😎He likes to joke around, tries to take life less seriously, doesn’t over cram his life with busyness, maybe cause he is in a partnership with someone younger 🤷‍♀️
… oh yeah and he’s got some good genes and a giant heart.
😎Handstand game on point courtesy of this amazing guy he trained with for a few years from Cirque de Soleil

Fall in San Diego. Also I can’t believe I found this shell while surfing last week. 👉👉I jumped off my board and grabbed it. Felt like a sign there are good things still out there if you look for them. I know a lot of you are suffering right now. The world is suffering. It’s a sad time. Social media is always a highlight reel of the light and the dark. I deleted it all last week and signed up for Khan academy science classes to nourish my brain. That doesn’t mean I’m ignoring the news. I just don’t get my news here. Whatever you’re going through, please Don’t forget to be kind to yourself and others. Kindness is a game changer. here for the 🤗hugs

Fall in San Diego. Also I can’t believe I found this shell while surfing last week. 👉👉I jumped off my board and grabbed it. New event with Surfer Mag photographer and author of the Surfer Magazine book . 4Pm Friday, October 20th. Come chat surfing, photos, and books with Grant and I. Funny story — I met Grant at the very spot my book starts over 12 years ago. And my first ever outdoor mag article published was in Surfer Girl, a one-time pull out of . Hope to see you there!

A few things happened this last month. The biggest is I got the “finish line blues.” That was something I wrote about how to deal with in my book. It felt comically ironic, and sucked that it happened to me. In some ways I prepared for it, but it hit me in a way I didn’t expect. I was exceptionally sad when certain friends didn’t reach out, but they didn’t even know. And it was hard to manage the deluge of requests to be on my A Game when I felt on my C game. The biggest thing is I forgot to give myself grace. One thing I did do is I did plan something to look forward to. I’ll be taking the next two weeks to gracefully recharge and reset in a brand new place away from my computer. It’s something Johnny and I planned many months ago. I am so grateful the day has come. When I come back I hope to take my other advice which is to connect with real friends in real life and be of service to more people. I still believe a little adventure is a major life antidote… and we all have to remember to give ourselves and each other more grace… as much grace as somehow I managed to pull off after 50 nose full of water awkward dives to finally get this shot with in Hawaii this winter. 🤦‍♀️😎sending hugs 🤗

Shout out to , the first outdoor podcast in the space hosted by a female who announced that today is their final episode after nine years of podcasting in the outdoor space. , the host of has been kind and helpful since the day I started Wild Ideas. Whenever I had a question about a proposal someone had sent me (and likely also sent her), she responded with thoughtfulness and clarity. She was always willing to answer my calls and was very kind to me as we both navigated the wilderness of the adventure podcast landscape (at least since I started) in 2016. Gale has also been an inspiration. I loved how much she empowered others to podcast in the space, even creating other shows hosted by women about the great outdoors. She also had me on as a guest of her own show – the first time I appeared on the other side of the mic for an episode titled “On Paper.” I was so nervous that I’d run my mouth, I called her to ask if we could redo the whole thing. It was a while ago, but she either let me redo part of it or just assured me it was totally fine. Either way, I was always grateful. When I went to write my business plan for Wild Ideas I hadn’t heard of She explores but listed them as a potential competitor when I discovered their show. Instead what I found is that they were an awesome friend in a space that today is full of so many great shows. Over the years, I’ve sent a few guests to their show, and Gale has sent many to me over to me. Thanks to Gale again and to the whole team for always being so cool and for encouraging so many women including myself to explore  more. You will be missed, but the trails you paved who continue to be enjoyed by many.

05/07/2023

June 25th was Vitiligo Day. I have vitiligo, a condition I’ve resisted and didn’t like talking about. But one I’ve been learning to accept that’s been a great teacher. For those who don’t know, Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition that affects 1% of the population. It causes pigment producing cells to stop producing pigment, causing white patches. For many people it appears on lips or tips. For me, it’s on my face, with spots on my body, and recently on my  hands. As a kid, I was super tan. So tan, people used to ask me if I was Spanish (my grandma was Spanish). But because I’m also naturally white, it’s hard to tell. When my vitiligo is active, my skin appears redder with white spots on my face. Only a few times when it’s been really active, someone has asked if I had a sunburn or got a skin peel, which made me laugh because you know I’m not the type of person to spend an afternoon getting a chemical skin peel. If I put on makeup, you can’t see it, but those who know me, also know this year is like the first year I’ve worn makeup. It was active leading up to the book release, and even on my book trailer and a few video podcasts.

I’ve tried it all: the top docs, light therapy, the best creams, including ones that cause you to age faster, but kinda’ work. Paleo, vegan, fasting, medical medium, celery juice. You know what works best? Acceptance. Surrendering. Love. Kindness. Decreasing stress as much as possible. Yes that also means eating foods that don’t stress my body, but moreover, not taking everything so seriously. Relaxing. RESTING. Not over-exercising. Laughing. Going with the flow. Kindness. That stuff works!

Is it the magic cure? I don’t know. The one time I got COVID, I was pretty relaxed and the condition went bananas. For now it’s also mellow. But it’s something I wanted to talk about because part of adventure and a big part of living wildly is also surrendering --- to what is, the things we can’t control, the things we can, and the courage to make a change if we are able. But also the courage to love even if we can’t change it. That has been the biggest teacher of vitiligo. 📷 (cont. below)

MANIFESTING BIG WAVES…That’s what I recently had the opportunity to speak with and about on ’s Wild ideas Worth Living Podcast. It was a fascinating conversation, one that talks about everything from mindset to human design to raising kids, dealing with fear, relationships and also how these two lovebirds met. And how anyone can manifest the life they want. I loved chatting with them and hope you do too. (Also really nice to take a break from talking about myself and the book). Ha! Enjoy everywhere you get your podcasts!

Book events in person are so much fun! Thanks to all who came out yesterday Brentwood especially my sister for hosting and bringing a crew, to my mom and sister for rallying all their LOs Angeles friends and my nephew and bro in law for coming out. And to all my friends from ages ago including my first boss and , fellow podcaster , og and honorary surf divas and and , and even a friend from my first writing work shop ever in 2006 . The best part about writing a book has been reconnecting with people dear to me, and having my family and all of our friends get together and share intimate stories with the few other strangers who find us and the book at these events. All I kept thinking about when writing it, was how fun hugging people in person would be when it came out, and I’m enjoying every minute. My mom used to invite everyone she knew, and total strangers to Thanksgiving dinner, and each of these book events sort of feels like the best parts of Thanksgiving with all of our family and friends and total strangers cross mingling and sharing stories.

What a rush! I got to open and it was awesome! On January 1, 2023, I got the call that I was selected to be a speaker for the sports category of . I was elated as the try out process was intense and mostly because I’ve been wanting to be a TEDx speaker since I went to the first TEDxSan Diego event as a journalist 10 years ago. Of course, it was also the same week as the book launch and I wasn’t sure how I’d pull it off. Well, it takes a village. I’d set an intention to play on a bigger stage, to surround myself with people doing good, and to expand my community and connect with people out of my bubble. That’s exactly what does and did. This particular TEDx was different from others in that every San Diego speaker was a local doing good in the community— from working on homelessness to blue energy. There were several meetings, dinners, field trips and more so we felt like family by the time June 11th came. The venue was stunning! I feel immense gratitude to all who were involved, my family and even sister and nephew who came back from Los Angeles twice in one week, my besties, sisters, and parents who supported, the very engaged and kind audience, and especially my fellow speaker friends, speaker coach, all the epic volunteers, and the whole community and it’s awesome curator who made it all happen. I have so much gratitude pouring out today! I’ll post the videos and pro photos when they go live!

Channeling this energy today. When you write a book, you spend a few years writing it. Then when it gets into the world, you are the one to let people know about it. Sure, people could just stumble on a book at the library or bookstore and they will, but if you want your ideas to get into the world, you also are gonna have to make it happen and pitch it yourself. I like this part of the journey. It’s exciting. It’s fun. It feels like paddling out on a bigger day. There’s some nervous energy, you know you might take a few on the head, but you also might catch the ride of your life. I am channeling what Johnny calls ETR. I thought it meant EASY THANKS and REST. But it means Enjoy The Ride… even if that ride gets a little choppy.

I just wanted to personally thank all if you for being part if this ride and for all the sweet messages and words of encouragement. I’ve been interviewing and telling other people’s stories for a long time, and even doing so in this book. But now I am also sharing my own. ETR, baby.. ETR! 📸by

This was my office in 2011. 🏄🏻‍♀️🌸I’d quit a stable, lucrative job to become a surf instructor. My mom thought I was crazy! It seemed irresponsible on paper, but I’d argue that being an outdoor guide is probably one of the best, most fun and impactful jobs you can have. What other job can you get where you in charge of someone’s life in their hands, someone who is often from a completely different social sphere than you, and also indirectly in charge of their joy, and perhaps, even, a life changing experience this fast.

When I taught surf lessons, it brought me massive joy as well. Mostly because students would come, often a little nervous, sometimes pale and tired from their daily lives. They’d have to face fear, overcome it, possibly partake in some shenanigans, and have some thrilling, courage building experiences. They’d return home and shortly after I’d often get a call from a few of them that said something like, “Shelby I quit my crappy job to start my dream. I ended a bad relationship.. for good, or I am finally moving across the country to a beach.” The changes they would make for the positive would keep going and going.

This is POWERFUL stuff, and just after a weeklong surf clinic. So if you can ever get the chance to work as a ski instructor. Surf instructor, a rock climbing guide, whitewater rafting guide, whatever, do it! We interviewed for ’s Wild Ideas Worth Living and my book. Laurie became an ice climbing guide at age 55, and since she’s already changed so many lives of others.

If you want to do an adventure and you are scared, and don’t know where to start, hire a guide, or join a group with a guide. Take a rock climbing lesson, a surf lesson, go with a guided group hike. It’s often way cheaper than you think for an hour or two lesson, and they provide the gear and assurance of safety so you can get out there with confidence, ease and just do it.

This is a big part of the message in my book and talks this year. I am all about getting on the trail the easiest way and also about celebrating the joy of amazing outdoor careers like guiding. Thanks to for one of the best jobs in my life.

This week I made my splash as an author.  (And yes many of these posts will include a cheesy pun). Thank you for all the kind notes, images of receipts for purchasing the book, re-shares on social media, offers to host and throw some book parties. I am saying YES to so many things, it feels very out of my comfort zone. But I am learning to take the advice I give in my own book: Start before you are fully ready. It’s go time!
