PERCH ANGLERS… Public Comments needed on the use of J-Hooks/Circle Hooks
Eric Z from DNR will join us tomorrow at 6AM to explain and discuss.
Three different options are being scoped for public comment to lessen the impacts on yellow perch anglers using live minnows. In a nutshell, option 1 allows anglers to use J-hooks while yellow perch fishing with various types of minnows including bull minnows, killifish, mummichogs, etc.
Options 2, and 3, propose concepts with the size of the bait (staying under 3-4 inches for yellow perch baits), and certain times of year, such as February-March that allow anglers to use J-hooks for those time periods for perch. Generally, circle hooks would still be required for live-lining for striped bass, with certain baits such as live spot and white perch which are typically used for rockfish. Overall, the goal is to allow a window for yellow perch anglers to fish with j-hooks with live minnows without getting warnings or tickets.
