It has been 50 years since Shirley Chisholm stared down racism and sexism to become the in history.
Today, all women carry her lessons with us.

Her friend and mentee, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) describes Ms. Chisholm and her legacy as follows:

“Congresswoman is often remembered for being the first. But she should also be remembered for what she accomplished during her tenure in Congress. She used her office to fight for low-income families, hungry school kids, single moms and immigrants. She was instrumental in creating the national school lunch program, expanding the food stamp program, and establishing the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, commonly known as WIC. She made this country a better place.

But Congresswoman Chisholm’s work is not finished. Many in our nation still face and . And it’s up to each one of us to keep working so that every American can live with and . When the polls open tomorrow morning, it’s my hope that across the country will carry Congresswoman Chisholm’s spirit with them to the ballot box.”

We agree -- VOTE tomorrow. But that is only the first step -- be engaged, hold your elected officials accountable, push back, stand up and be a voter 365 days of the year! We are all counting on each other.

The U.N. dedicated Oct. 11 as The International Day of the Girl Child in 2012 to address the gender inequality that young women face, and to protect their human rights. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the many issues girls are facing around the globe and give them the tools for a better, more fulfilling future. This month We Speak The Name of Evelyn C. Inya-Agha, due to her commitment to her overall health!
I have been overweight since I was about 9 years old. I started packing on the the weight when I was molested by an adult cousin; during that time he made a comment about me being fat and how it displeased him. Subconsciously, I started using weight protection. From the ages of 12 thru 29 I tried to lose weight many times. I restricted calories, used meal replacements, diet pills, and participated in medically assisted weight-loss programs; each time I regained all the weight and more. At my heaviest I was 377 lbs. For a long time I blamed my weight, and a lot of hold ups in life on my sexual trauma. In 2013 I began therapy to address my trauma and its impacts on me physically and mentally. By 2016, I still had not lost the weight, however I was feeling fly as hell (b/c I was) and felt comfortable in my body. But, I started having pain in my feet and knees. I was diagnosed with planters fascitis attributed to my weight. I started considering weight-loss surgery. I spent 6 months preparing for it including sharing with friends and family. I committed to making fitness a habit because I was told I would have to exercise and monitor nutrition. As I changed my habits I started losing weight on my own. By May 2017 I had lost 40 lbs. My doctor asked: " Evelyn, if you know you have to eat a certain way and exercise after you have the surgery and you're doing this things now and succeeding, why are you having the surgery?" She was right, I could do this on my own. I decided not to have surgery and instead committed to continuing a healthier lifestyle. I did not commit to perfection. I committed to eating responsibly. I committed to working out 5 times a week and moving every day. I committed to being patient with myself, and forgiving when I over ate. I committed to continuously assessing my relationship with food. I committed to consistency and patience in order to see the difference. Today I weigh 274 lbs and my goal is 235 lbs. In a little over a year I lost over 100 lbs. I could not be prouder of my commitment to ME.
