“I’ve never brought any classically titillating books to read, like ‘50 shades of Grey’. Sun hats, though. Sun hats are titillating. Sun hats are sexy."

----
Jonathan Nethercutt on Tournament Essentials:

So, I think that there might be a slight exaggeration regarding how much zen mastery I have… but I do bring three things to every tournament I attend -- a book, a sunhat, and a tea mug.

The sun hat started in college, and I’ve maintained it. There is a good amount of idle time between games, and as I’ve learned from Early Recognition Is Critical, sun protection is a plus. The less the sun is on you, the cooler you’ll be. Also, you have less of a chance of getting sunburned on your face. I often forget to put sunscreen on my face.

The tea mug ended up in my bag around my senior year of college. As I’ve gotten older, I got more into hot tea. Now, I always drink hot tea at tournaments, and pretty much everywhere else that I go. Hot tea works wonders during winter tournaments.

And the book – I read all the time. The first book I brought to a tournament was Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. I started to bring books to tournaments last year, and I read in car rides and at the hotel. I figure that more knowledge is always a plus, and books are good for knowledge.

I’ve never brought any classically titillating books to read, like “50 shades of Grey”. But from an intellectual sense, I bring a ton. A lot of them are psychology books.

Sun hats, though. Sun hats are titillating. Sun hats are sexy.

"I’ve spent the last 7 years living in a gym…. I always travel with some stuff; lacrosse balls, a foam roller, jump rope, mini bands. I once got in trouble with TSA over packing a kettlebell in my carry-on."

----
Kelly Johnson on CrossFit training:

I’m a professional fitness coach, specializing in CrossFit. I feel like I've spent the last seven years living in a gym. When I traveled to broadcast for the AUDL, I always tried to sneak in a workout. I took advantage of the opportunities I got. The key to that was prioritizing my time and making sure I always had equipment on me. I always travel with some stuff; lacrosse balls, a foam roller, jump rope, mini bands. I once got in trouble with TSA for packing a kettlebell in my carry-on. But, it totally worth it, as it was well used at CUT camp by me, Opi and the other coaches.

I actually got into CrossFit seven years ago while playing with my old team, Chicago Nemesis. My first captain, Jess, was training for the CrossFit Games, and she was seeing significant benefits from her training. She brought it to Nemesis once a week as "NemeFit". That’s what started my love and journey to becoming a coach and using CrossFit as a way to train for ultimate. When I moved to Seattle, I started the same routine for Riot, called "RiFit".

In CrossFit, there is a series where everyone can compete, similar to Sectionals in ultimate. After that, there is Regionals, and then the best of the best compete in the CrossFit Games, which is like Nationals.

Before my two shoulder surgeries, I was divided. I had competed in CrossFit Regionals and played club for a handful of years, but I was torn between the two. During my first recovery, I gained a new level of discipline and how to care for my body. Since then, I’ve also made ultimate my priority. It’s not realistic to be a pro at two sports simultaneously. Whenever I retire from ultimate though, I’ll still use CrossFit to feed my competitive drive.

As a trainer, I’ll get people who come to me and say, "I want to get better.” The best advice that I have for maximizing your training is to identify your strengths, weaknesses, and determine your goals. If you know what you want to accomplish, it’s pretty easy to put together a plan as long as you find the resources and have the discipline to follow it. Motivation is too easy to lose; you have to be disciplined to be successful in what you go after.

“A group of us will get together and have onesies sleepovers. It mostly consists of being in a onesie and playing video games.”

----
Natasha Won on onsies:

In 2010, I was with two of my friends from Polar Bears – Lisa P and Daniel Naruo. We were shopping at Target and stumbled upon this set of Polar Bear onsies. We decided to buy them and take them to practice, and it kind of took off.

Now, a group of us will get together and have onesies sleepovers. It mostly consists of being in a onesie and playing video games. Right now, we're really into Grand Theft Auto because it's a really silly game and we love to blow things up. We also enjoy watching hilarious YouTube videos together.

I own three onesies: the polar bear one, a shark one - in reference to the San Jose Sharks - and a Pokemon one. I have a complimentary Pikachu beanie, as well. The Pokemon one is my favorite because it reminds me of my childhood.

I really love the original 150 pokemon. I kind of got into the second generation with Gold, but it didn’t really stick. I got this through a special order online, but I can’t remember where.

When I was younger, I had little figurines and playing cards. I’ve thrown away the figurines but I still have my cards. I love my Ninetales card – I think it’s the best looking. Unfortunately, I never caught them all.

Fun facts: My favorite is Ditto, because technically, it can be any pokemon in the world. My favorite type is psychic, and I like Mew. The best starter is Charmander, of course. I never caught Mewtwo.

"If things are tense during games, I’ll bring him out, because no one can be mad at a minion."

----
Stanley Peterson on his minion -

I got this little minion - Steve - this last summer in Worlds when we were in London. My teammate, Evan Pagent, won him in a claw machine, and gave me Steve to take around Italy. He’s traveled the world; he came with me to London this last summer, and generally makes it to most tournaments. He’s become a good luck charm.

I saw "Despicable Me" with my entire team after I got him. I actually thought the movie could have been better, but I enjoyed being with everyone. At the movie, Steve had his own ticket, seat, and a box of hot tamales. Since then, my friends and I started to develop a personality around him.

Like, he ends up in random places in the house, so we joke that he likes to play hide-in-seek in the fridge, fireplace, and on top of the dart board. At tournaments, people have footballs and soccer balls, and Steve usually ends up with one while we’re tossing things around. He’s also great at lightening the mood; if things are tense during games, I’ll bring him out, because no one can be mad at a minion.

Actually, that's one of the greatest things about Steve. He’s always making people smile. When I take him through airport security, little kids will whisper and point.

I try to keep in a good condition. I’ll toss him in the washing machine with some Tide detergent, which is a lot for him, but he’s a smart guy and figures it out. If I lost him, I’d have to go to another claw machine and get another one out of there.

To all the curly hair girls out there – you just have to own it. Don’t fight it, because you won’t win. At the end of the day when you get off the field, just let loose.

----
Claire Desmond on curly hair:

I’ve had this Cal teddy bear since 2008. It was a gift from my mom during my freshman year of college. Currently, it sits up on a shelf, but it's meaningful to me because I started to play ultimate at Berkeley. It changed my life.

In college, my hair was pretty short, so I had a fro - literally. I started to wear headbands like a bandana to keep it out of the way, and now I can't play without one. I have at least 20 headbands and a tight rotation of curl product. Sometimes, in windy climates, it can get in the way, but the headbands keep it under control.

This USA headband is from Worlds 2012 in Japan. It’s been on four or five continents. I always take it with me when I travel as a good luck charm. In really serious games, I’ll wear my hair in two tight French braids, but generally, I stick with the headbands.

I think it’s funny that people recognize me by my hair. It’s a part of who I am, and it’s become a part of me being a player on Fury. In middle school and high school, I had a flat iron and I attempted that whole process. However, it was like fighting Mother Nature. To all the curly hair girls out there – you just have to own it. Don’t fight it, because you won’t win. At the end of the day when you get off the field, just let loose.
