Remembering Mike Henry
KBest Media was saddened to learn of the passing of long-time radio broadcaster Mike Henry. When I returned to my hometown of Big Spring, TX twelve years ago, Mike Henry was introduced to me as a solid slice of KBST. He was the newsman that the community trusted, and I quickly learned why. Mike was not a dramatic person in the public eye; he was calm, quiet, and could even be shy. There were times that Mike’s presence went unseen at a news event…but he got what was needed for the broadcast the following day, or even the very same day. Mike was quick to separate facts from innuendos, and would never open the mic to report the news unless he spoke facts. I began to realize that, “If Mike Henry says it…then it is true.” I know that the comforting sound of his trusted voice also made countless people in our community feel the same way. Mike taught me something that many folks have heard me say about KBest News over the years: “We don’t look for bad news; the bad news will find us. We look for good news to report.” We have developed that phrase into a philosophy for KBest…a policy…even a lifestyle. I thank Mike Henry for speaking it…and for demonstrating it.
After leaving KBST, Mike and I didn’t bump into each other often, but when our paths did cross, he was always friendly, and we could laugh and chat as if a day hadn’t passed.
I thank Mike Henry for his professional ethics, his contributions to his / our community, and mostly…I thank him for his friendship.
May he rest in peace.
