Ignorant Americans vs Respect Abroad

I'm still alive! Blog posts about travel and life coming soon, but for now, DA Writes became a platform for just a small rant about a certain youtuber....

If you’re on social media at all, the name Logan Paul has become pretty familiar to you the last few days. If you’re not on social media, I think you’re lucky. I cringe every time…

Backroom Whispering Productions

I've been writing a few posts lately for Backroom Whispering Productions. This one is about young women characters in dystopian YA books. Check it out!

BATTLEFIELDS AND BIRTHING ROOMS

(Dorothy McQuaid, Showrunner for Pycera/Social Media for BWP)

What do you think of when you hear "young woman protagonist in a YA dystopian novel?" Do you think of Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, not terribly ladylike, bowhunting for meat and enemies, reluctantly leading revolutions in a gray or black uniform? Or maybe Tris Pryor from… [ 1201 more words. ]

Brief reactions to Hiroshima

This morning I heard on on the radio that our Secretary of State visited Hiroshima and the peace museum. Five years have passed since my own visit but my hope is still that more world leaders will visit and realize the magnitude of their actions. https://dorothyannwrites.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/brief-reactions-to-hiroshima/

I’m not sure if I have time for a polished blog post before going off on adventures (today is a free day and my friends have planned to visit Osaka, Nara and a fantastic store in Kyoto, it& #8…

Walking to Canada (+wool update)

Hi everyone! I can't believe it's December and my year with the SCA is over. On my way back to the midwest I stopped at Niagara Falls, which I had never seen before! My friend Renee was kind enough to show me around and even take a little walk to Canada with me! So, the American side of Niagara falls is in a state park, and the Canadian side... Woolen and Wonderful

Check it out! Katherine continues the adventures of the Fluffy Puffs I introduced in "rock n wool weekend!"

I have had the pleasure of rediscovering a favorite hobby of mine: spinning. After running out of my last batch of wool, I was hesitant to buy more (I do try to live frugally). However, when a frie...

Around this time three years ago I was goofing around in Paris. Now I'm reading about tragedy there and hoping I live to see the day when violence isn't the answer and innocents aren't killed to send messages. Praying for Paris and praying for peace.

Second Generation Witness: Part One, the Auschwitz Museum.

For some reason, a few days ago there was a spite in visits to an old post- one that I wrote over three years ago, and cried the entire time writing. It was very difficult to write, and I still don't think I did the experience justice. But for some reason, a few days ago, people were clicking on it, and I hope that it gave them (and you) something to think about. (Note that the links to pictures in this post have broken, but there are plenty of pictures available online.)

Date: 9/24 Location: Vinohrady Mood: heavy-hearted. Listening to: City & Color, "Save Your Scissors" I don't want to write this blog entry. I didn't want to get on the bus that morning. I didn'...

Dear Future Interns:

Hi readers, this post is aimed (generally) at future members of Americorps, particularly the program I am currently leaving: the Hudson Valley Corps of the Student Conservation Association. It will contain information that is relevant to other Americorps positions, other "year of service" type positions, and for those of you not in the 'future intern' role, a glimpse at my day-to-day-life for the past year. The Book Table by Backroom Whispering Productions on iTunes

Hi everyone, as some of you know I've been involved in starting a podcast company, Backroom Whispering Productions. We're doing a book discussion/review podcast, "The Book Table," and working on a fantasy audio drama podcast that will be arriving early next year. I'm excited to be a part of something new and awesome, so if it piques your interest please 'like' the FB page and check out the first episode of The Book Table, a review of An Ember in the Ashes. I am not featured in this particular episode but you'll hear my voice and bad puns in future ones!

Not enough for a blog post but just copied from my personal facebook in hopes of spreading smiles: The past week has been a lesson in small beauties. Life may be stressful and complicated but I can still get a smile from a stuffed bear in a bear hat, leftover mashed potatoes fitting perfectly in a reused potato salad container, and a rainbow of laundry.

Across the USA by Train for Just $213

This has been making the rounds on Facebook lately- what do you think, readers? Would you do something like this?

The Next Step: What is Americorps? - Involuntary Adulthood

DAwrites did a guest post for Involuntary Adulthood! It's about Americorps as a post-college option for community service and job experience.

After I graduated college, I was so confused about what to do next. I found something different than I expected, but also a welcome change: Americorps.
