In 2018 I got the opportunity to visit a veddi village, they are also known as adiwasin.On that journey, I spoke with their leader and in the discussion, he informed me of the major problems they are facing nowadays. They were put out of their forest and forced to live in a village where they had to adapt to normal civilization and were forbidden from going into the forest. In the forest, they had everything in the palm of their hand to survive. They had natural medicine, and clear water and they lived in harmony with the animals where everything was balanced. Now they are facing major water problems which have led them to have kidney diseases Many political figures have given them the promise of clean water to have their votes but have failed in keeping their word. They didn’t need money as the forest provided them with everything they needed but now by putting them out into civilization some people are breaking the law to survive. When they wanted to get drunk they would have loads of honey but now they are used to having alcohol as political figures gift them to win votes. The need for a degree was not needed as they graduated with age from nature. Many people are aiding them with spectacles but what they wanted is their freedom to practice their ways. They are more developed mentally and physically than civilized people they know what to offer and so many other things. I had to think twice about whose more developed us or them. With their huge knowledge about how to balance life with nature to live the 70 years or more in a more healthy way, we should add it to our system and improve ourselves by accessing them. As the younger generation, we should go in search of this knowledge and expose it to the world. This knowledge cannot be a lie since they survived more than 2000 years without the use of technology or western medicine in their lands. As a Sri Lankans, we should honor and know our roots and not forget it but cherish it and learn from them to have a healthy journey.
